on April 21, 2008I thought it was quiet, comfortable, a little expensive but worth the lire.
It sits in the Dorsoduro off the Grand Canal on the quiet Canal San Vio. Here's a live webcam of Canal San Vio from the Hotel.
Book in advance prior to high season, it is often full with few if any good rooms available.
The view and location are outstanding, and the staff is very helpful.
Hotel American-Dinesen sits in my favorite part of Venice, in the quieter Dorsoduro section, south across the Grand Canal from the more boisterous San Marco side.
I recommend paying the extra for a room on the second floor with a canal-view balcony (room 201).
I thought it was worth the money at the time, (~$200 /night in Oct 2001), the rooms are bigger & better, & the canal view makes it worth it.
Price Update: High Season for the double room I had with the view (Room 201) is now 300 Euros / $450 per night (with a "no-view" single going for 180 Euros / $270).
In low season (beginning end of October, the same room 201 with the view is 140 Euros / night). Venice is expensive, and the Euro vs. dollar exchange is no help.
