We want to travel from Salzburg to Venice on Aug 30th.. It seems that trains run as far as Villach and then you have to transfer to a bus to completer the >3 hr journey. OR we can take a longer (all train) journey by switching in Innsbruck and Verona (but waste a day of traveling). We don't want to take the more direct night train because we want to enjoy the scenery. I am a little concerned about the bus as we will be travelling with our 3 year old. Is there a more direct way via train? Any suggestions? Or is the bus "do-able"
The bus should be doable for you, they are comfortable and will have a washroom on board. A reservation for the bus is a must. You can book this on line with DB, which probably have already looked at.
You can take a train from Villach Hbf ( Hauptbahnhof - main train station) to Venice ( VE S.L. - Train Staion in Venice Santa Lucia, train ends here adn you are in the middle of town! ) You may have to change trains in Mestre, but trains run frequently from here into Venice. It's very easy and cheap. Make sure when traveling by train in Italy that you stamp the ticket in one of the yellow boxes that you see at the trainstation BEFORE getting on the train.

The whole place is just a miracle. Just walking around gives you a very special feeling. The old houses, the canals and the bridges, everything breathes history. Just buy a map and start walking. Everything except the hordes of tourists.
Be there during Carnival and be sure to stay out by the Grand Canal at sunrise and sunset Travelling down the Grand Canal at sunset and sunrise - Side trips to Borano. Walking around and eating breakfast, drinking lattes and watching people crossing bridges and scurrying about.
On walking around Venice I came across some very interesting street signs showing the numbers of houses.
One in particular stood out for me and it was a lion sitting above the street numbers looking very impressive for such a mundane job!! That such a nice piece of art could be used for such a basic job speaks volumes to me of the attention to detail that the peoples of Venice take in all things.
Wandering around the Piazza without any care in the world!! ;-P Take a good look at the summer crowd in Venice. I'm sure you'd figure out when NOT to come to Venice. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like to be crushed by the crazy crowds.
