Not all beds are expensive as in Hotel Bauer by Trekki I did read so often that it is better to stay outside of Venezia, in Mestre for example, just for the prices. I found that this is not true, well, that this would be too rigorous to say. By now, Venezia has so many charming small B&Bs, pensione and guesthouses, that it is not really necessary to stay outside. Plus – Venezia at night is even more magic than during the day – when Piazza San Marco and the buildings along are illuminated, when the day tourists are vanished from the scene and when the whole atmosphere gets very much relaxed. Everything is, according to my experience, a question of time, location and timing. This means, if you book your room early enough, you will be able to stay in Venezia for around 50 Euro per night for single or 80 Euro for double occupancy even in the high season. In winter, the prices will be even less. Summer prices (mostly August) are very often lower than for the high season. Of course, the prices climb very much during the high seasons, which are around Carneval, Easter and Christmas, plus from around early May to September. Accommodation in San Marco is mostly higher than in the other sestiere. I found that northern Castello and Can(n)aregio have often lower prices than other sestiere. If you are flexible in time and don’t have that utmost desire to watch Carneval in Venezia, then it will be even less expensive.
I have booked quite late and got so many turndowns from B&Bs and small hotels, after I started sending mails approx. 5 weeks prior to my travel (from May 2, 2007, on). But these were mostly for the weekends, many hotels could offer me a bed for the week days. When I already started to get desperate at the thought to maybe have to pay more than 150 Euro per night, I got a nice email from the owners of Ca’Riccio (see below), who offered me a double room for the first 3 nights and help in finding something for the following days. I was thrilled and very much pleased with what I got ! So my utmost suggestion is: * book early, * avoid the peak times (Carival, Easter, Christmas and New Year, September and October and during Biennale anyhow, which is every second [odd] year), * stay in Can(n)aregio or northern Castello (these two sestiere also have the advantage of being quite close to Fondamenta Nuove for day trips to the lagoon islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, and it is mostly only 15 minutes walk to Piazza San Marco and even less to Ponte Rialto). Cristiano (of Ca’Riccio) already told me about the apartment, but when I finally entered it, I was absolutely amazed ! It is incredible how much can fit on maybe 25 m2 and make it look homey (and no way overfull)! The owner, Margharita, also thinks about everything to make her guests feel at home. The bathroom (with shower, toilet, sink and bidet) has enough towels and toilet paper for weeks. The kitchen closets have dishes to serve a lot of people and some essentials like the typical Italian coffeemaker and coffee, oil, vinegar, peperoncino (perfect for cooking), pastries, milk etc. Plus, it is gas cooking, which makes any kind of food taste better (something I am not used to, as in my country some idiots have decided that we only use electric stove) The 4 windows do have old fashioned wooden window blinds with the little “woman” to snapp for keeping them open – something I could not get enough of – opening them in the morning and closing them in the evening. But again, I come from a country where some idiot has once decided that these window blinds will be mostly replaced by boring shutters.
I enjoyed my stay there, albeit it was a bit loud, but well, this is Italy. I don’t mean that the area was crammed with tourists; I hardly saw some there, but just below in the street is one of these newspaper stands, which open at 6 in the morning. Bathroom is small but has everything you need, shower, toilet and bidet, which came in very much handy to cool my poor feet after the daily marathons. I paid 110 Euro per night, cash. That is the rate for the appartment and it sleeps two. It can be booked through Ca’Riccio. Stupid me forgot to take more photos inside before I started to open my backpack and throw my things around. So I only include a photo of my most practised ritual – coffee making and some photos of the little calle. It is the yellowish house on the right with green window blinds. The appartment is on the first floor. Theme: OtherPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Venezia, Canaregio, Calle Larga G. On our short visit to Venice in Sep 2007, I decided that I wanted to stay close to the Rialto Bridge, as we hadn't stayed in that area before. After extensive research I stumbled upon Corte Gherardi B&B which sounded perfect - it was in our price range, looked great (on the website) and was just a few minutes walk from the Rialto Bridge, in a quiet area. The B&B is located on the 3rd floor of a great old building, with the entrance hidden in a small courtyard accessed via a big iron gate. It has only 3 rooms, which are recently renovated with comfortable beds and flat screen TVs. One of the rooms has a private bathroom, and the other 2 rooms share a bathroom. There is free internet in the hallway. Located just around the corner from a small canal (which runs off the Grand Canal), we took advantage of this and arrived at the B&B in style - by water taxi from the airport : )
Although we arrived at around 9.30pm, we received a warm welcome, and were well looked after by our delightful hosts throughout our stay. We were travelling with my parents, and had booked the 2 rooms which share a bathroom. As the weather was fine, we enjoyed breakfast on the small roof terrace, which was a fabulous way to start the day and enjoy the view over the roof tops. I would recommend Corte Gherardi as a modern, clean and friendly place to stay in a great location.

my room by sue_stone In May 2005 I spent one night alone in Venice, on my way to the huge European VT Meeting in Verona. As I was arriving in Venice latish in the Friday night and departing again in the morning, I wanted to stay somewhere close to the train station. Whilst researching I came across Hotel Santa Lucia, which was very close to the station, looked nice and clean (well, from the website anyway) and had a room available.
The hotel was only about 2 minutes from the train station. I had a single room - plenty big enough for me, which had a bed, desk, wardrobe and TV. It was clean and modern. The very clean share bathroom was just across the hallway. The man on reception was friendly and helpful. Although I left too early for breakfast in the morning, there was a cute courtyard where you can enjoy breakfast and plan your day. It wasn't the cheapest place to stay in the area - there are cheaper, but it was convenient for me, and safe and clean. On my last trip to Venice, there were 4 of us (2 couples) and the most economical accommodation option was to stay in a self contained apartment. I came across the Piazza Apartment whilst looking at hotel accommodation at Ca'delle Acque - the owners of this hotel have several self contained apartments, and Piazza fit the bill. Located less than 1 minutes walk from San Marco (!!) there were 2 bedrooms, a lounge room, small kitchen and bathroom with shower. It was not 5 star, more like 3 star, but perfect for our needs. The very friendly and helpful owners met us and showed us through the apartment, gave us maps, with instructions to leave the keys on the table on our morning of departure. Easy. We could explore Venice, return to our apartment at leisure, and even prepare our own meals there to save a little money - it is very expensive to dine out in Venice!
We really enjoyed staying here, and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it. BTW - there was about 20 stairs to get into the apartment. Ca’Riccio is a lovely B&B or guesthouse, located in the upper (second) floor of an old Venetian house in eastern Can(n)aregio. It was restored in 2004 and offers everything you need for relaxing after the long walks in the city. They have 8 rooms, mostly located in the northern wing (with windows to the south), and one (where I stayed, photo 1) in the southern wing, where the breakfast and relaxing part is. But this wing is separated from the common rooms, so I had my own area with bathroom and bedroom. Bed was heavenly hard/firm, which made me even more happy (I just hate these soft beds). It was very much quiet up there, and I could sleep with open window (no mosquitos at this time of 2007, or they didn’t get up that high). What I really loved was the elevated area in the breakfast room (photo 2), nice and comfy sofas for relaxing and reading. They didn’t have books up there, but will have over the course of time (if Cristiano, the owners’ son, who literally eats books, won’t have a hand on them, lol). The breakfast room itself is very much comfy as well, small tables and nice furniture and it was very much relaxing to have breakfast here in the mornings.
Breakfast is included in the room rate, but, for those of you who expect huge breakfasts as in other countries – sorry, this is a typical Veneziano B&B, and breakfast is in Venezia style, with coffee (whatever style you want), orange juice and a cornetto (croissant type, filled with delicious marmelade) and yoghurt. Why else are Italians not that fat – they don’t stuff in all different kinds of things into their stomachs in the morning. I myself was well-fed with my breakfasts. Room rates are according to their website. Note that there is low season and high season (the dates described on the site). Whatever they describe on their website is true. They are very much guest oriented – ask for something and you get it. The whole family, Lidia, Paolo and Cristiano, know so much about their beloved city and will be happy to tell you tales and stories and of course give you recommendations of where to go (sights, restaurants, etc). Location: it is quite easy to find: if you start from Fondamente Nuovo, walk east and then into the forth calle (a tiny one) from your right (between the 2 bridges are 5 calles). Continue straight ahead until you arrive at a small campo. Keep left and continue walking left until you see a canale in front of you. Careful, if you continue to walk straight, you will fall in the canale which would be he sign that you went too far. It is the fourth door on your left (before the canale), look for the sign Ca’Riccio at the door (small but easy to see). Oh, and in case the ever present forum mobsters will come across the same photos I am adding here on Ca’Riccio’s website – bad luck, haha ! I am preparing a CD for them and give them permission to use my photos. To all those who are on budget, it might be the perfect solution. The accomodation consist of huge room with five beds, 25 euros each. There is also an extra bathroom. The main problem might be, how to get there, how to find it in again in the midle of thousands of short and narrow streets which all looks alike? The statue you see, on the top of the street-wall and this graphiti might be very helpful.
Ca' della Musica is situated in a short and narrow street inside of Campo Castello, probably one of the most quiet parts of Venice. The house is an medieval construction, inside of which the owner displays a kind of small museum with ancient furniture and accessories from the past times. Antica Locanda Montin by tpal I had been to Venice twice before and both times had stayed at the same hotel in San Marco. My stay had been pleasant but, at least in my mind, not very adventurous. This time I wanted to experience the out-of-the-way, the less well traveled and perhaps a little less touristy. Fortunately, Carol shared my goals and, for some inexplicable reason, trusted me to select the perfect accommodation. Now the pressure was on. Price was a consideration of course, but more important was the potential for a great memory. After reading every travel guide I could find and innumerable web searches (including VT) I finally collated all my data and made a...wild guess! The choice was the Antica Locanda Montin. I booked it online and never gave it another thought...except for the two additional confirmation requests, the additional web-review searches and and a little anxiety on the train trip from Como to Venice. We knew we would be on our own once we disembarked the Vaporetto at the Accademia Bridge stop but we kind of like it that way. With map in hand and rolling luggage in tow we were off. Amazingly, after a few luggage flips at bridge crossings, we spotted the enigmatic lantern with Locanda Montin written in red letters. On entering we were greeted by a friendly young women, Elizabeth, who spoke enough English to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Yes, she was expecting us, yes our room was ready and no...there is no elevator. Up we went to the third floor and it was worth every step. Our room was one of the two rooms with a balcony and overlooked the Rio Delle Eremite, one of the many small side canals in Venice. The room itself was surprisingly spacious but definitely not the Ritz...and that was perfect. The furniture and bed were slightly past their prime but comfortable. The bath seemed recently updated and clean. What was more remarkable was what wasn't there. There was no television, no telephone, no mini-bar and no pretense. For some these may be negatives...for us it was just right!
Located in Dorsoduro, the Locanda Montin was a favorite spot for many late 19th Century and early 20th Century intellectuals and artist including Gabriele D'Annunzio, Modigliani and Ezra Pound. The evidence of this is everywhere. It seems that over the years it had become the custom for artists to trade their work for accommodations or meals. Consequently, the walls are quite literally covered with artwork...halls, stairwells, rooms...everywhere. As we understand it, some of the art become quite valuable but sadly had to be sold during tougher times. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent. In fact Carol and I agreed that our dinner there was the best we had in Venice. We ate elegantly outside under their vine covered arbor somewhat in contrast to the artsy nature of the hotel itself. We also enjoyed the complimentary breakfast outside each morning. While we were there we met two Puerto Rican women, sisters, who were staying at the Montin while on a side trip from Rome where one of their daughters was getting married. One sister related this story: "I visited Venice before many years ago with my ex-husband. We stayed at one of the five star hotels in San Marco. It was very elegant. Nothing but the best. But, you know, you don't really see the place when you travel first class." We agree! our room by sunlovey This is it- you have found THE place to stay while in Venice, Locanda Orseolo is perfect. The locanda itself is both charming and beautifully appointed, in rich shades of red and exposed wood. Beautifully lit with traditional Venetian glass fixtures and such. The locanda staff is so friendly, so helpful, you'll leave feeling like you've made new friends. The breakfast each morning is delectable... made to order crepes and omlettes, a buffet of cheeses, meats and fruit, freshly made cappucinos and espressos. The rooms are extremely spacious, especially by Venetial standards... and so elegantly decorated. Ours had a view of a canal...heaven. And the bath is the most modern I've encountered in Europe. I highly highly recommend this place to you... We will ONLY stay here upon our returns to Venezia. A double room is priced between 140 euro to 240 euro depending on the time of year.
Located just a minute's walk off the San Marco arcade.. within a little iron gate- a very discreet location... EVERYthing about this place is outstanding... location, rooms, staff, breakfast, decor, coziness, elegance.... Barbara & Matteo- truly outstanding owners and friends
