In August 2004 I stayed in the Albergo Marin, because of its neighbourhood to the central train station (Ferrovia). It is a small and clean basic guesthouse with friendly staff. I paid 40 Euro for a single room with shared bath. A continental breakfast was included. | | | | Belle Arti Hotel Venice: Belle Arti by the Accademia Bridge
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Given the sky-high price of hotels in Venice, the Belle Arti isn't bad. I was satisfied with it, but not thrilled. My single room was small and seemed a bit depressing at first, but opening all the curtains and windows to let in some natural light helped. Rooms come with a safe, hair dryer, and air-conditioning, although they don't turn the air-conditioning on till it gets pretty warm. There's a good breakfast buffet included, with fruit, several kinds of breakfast rolls, cold meats, cereal, juice, and of course coffee or tea. There's also a bar. My only real complaint here is that my phone didn't work well at all, calling back to the U.S. Either I could hear them or they could hear me, but rarely both at the same time. So if it's important for you to call someone back home, I couldn't recommend this place. Otherwise, it's fine. The staff is very nice. For a quiet room, ask for a room that doesn't overlook the courtyard.
There's a nice courtyard with a fountain, some flowers, and greenery. You can eat breakfast out here or inside. Good hotel near Campo Santa Margherita, a double room with WC and breakfast costs 80 euro in low season and 95 in high season.
Venice is very expensive and this is a good price for an accomodation. | | | | Arlecchino Hotel: Good location, close to the train station
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I had booked a room at the Hotel Olimpia, but when I arrived I was told they had overbooked and I was put up in the Hotel Arlecchino instead. It's was right next door, not too bad. The room I got was a double for single use, so there was enough space for me. I have no idea, however, how two adults could squeeze into this room. It was a small room, with a tiny bathroom. No shower curtain, which meant the bathroom floor was flooded after taking a shower. The bed was small and there was barely space enough for my small bags. But you're not in Venice to spend too much time in your room, so it was okay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included in the rate, several croissants, rolls, jam etc.
What I liked best at Hotel Arlecchino was the location. I know many people want to stay right at St Marco's, but I prefer being close to the train station. It's about a five minute walk, very easy to find.My room faced a smaller canal, which I thought was just picturesque as overlooking St Marco's. Hotel Foscari Palace occupies an excellent situation on the Grand Canal at 50 m from the famous Ca' d'Oro and thus near the Rialto. The hotel is accessible with a taxi boat but also by the Vaporetto Linea 1 which stops at Ca' d'Oro. Here one has to walk only 100 m of flat ground (no bridge!) to reach the hotel. One wing of the hotel gives onto Campo Santo, a small square connecting the Grand Canal and the Strada Nova which is the main trading artery of the district Cannaregio. Everything would thus be perfect if the hotel was not surrounded from both sides by buildings in renovation! The hotel Foscari undergoes the nuisances of these works; it is a temporary problem but nevertheless real. Our room of "superior" type was facing the Campo Santo which has a width of a dozen metres. Fortunately, the works inside the opposite building did not hamper us. The works started at about 8 am and finished at about 4 pm. We underwent no noise of machines. By bending out of the window we had sight on the Grand Canal. The other facade of the hotel gives onto an alley about 2 m wide and there the building in works was provided with a big crane. We cannot say if these works were annoying for the customers of this wing or not. It is likely that these works of renovation will continue for several months. The more expensive luxe rooms and suites of the façade on the Grand Canal are avoiding the annoyances. Our room was about 20 m2 plus a hall and a nice and complete bathroom. The room was very well furnished. The cleanliness was perfect; the towels were renewed twice a day. TV with flat screen. The nights were quiet. Buffet breakfast with a wide choice of fresh fruits. The staff is irreproachable and helpful; all speak English. From the large number of shorts seen in the breakfast room we deducted that the clientele was mainly North-American. Upon our arrival a cup of fruit and mineral water was waiting for us and upon leaving we received a basket with drinks and biscuits for the journey, what is a rare attention.

A room that really is two minutes from St Mark's Square. When we stayed in November 2001 the room was about 50 euros a night in a room with shared bath. Amazing Venetian furniture in an atmospheric location, down a winding street behind St Mark's Square. We found the staff friendly and helpful and our room was marvellous value for the price - well equipped, clean and very comfortable. *UPDATE* It has been a while since we stayed and I've learnt that the hotel has had a major refurbishment - as far as I can tell there are no longer any budget rooms: everything is 'en suite'. A friend stayed in Feb 2006 and found her en suite room very comfortable. It was definitely pricier - but she stayed out of season and got 3 nights for 300 euros: still good for the location. The price included breakfact served in the room. There are no real bargains at the height of the season here now though, by the look of the website.
Outstanding characteristics? ...Wild venetian styling. ...Location, location, location ... Comfortable and well equipped rooms. Take a look at their website to get the feel of the decor! On my short Italy trip in May 2005, I spent two nights in Allogi Cerotto Calderan. It is a basic guesthouse with clean and comfortable rooms in a central, but quiet location. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. My single room with private bath, but without breakfast was 41 Euro per night.
