Mobile Phone

by hawkhead

I hope this will be the last question! I am taking my own mobile phone to Italy and it is set up to use in Italy. My question is regarding phone numbers to dial.....
Once I arrive in Venice I have to call a phone number. This number starts with +39 and then a whole string of other numbers e.g. +393489****** (12 numbers). Do I dial the entire number, or do I start somewhere within the string of numbers? It looks like a mobile phone number.
Any help from the experts to the rank amateur would be gratefully received!!

If you call from an italian telephone you can avoid to digit +39. If you're calling from your mobile telehpone, dial the whole number with 00 instead of +
Cheers

Normally you can store all your mobile numbers with + country code etc.

The phone server will automical convert the numbers to local, national or international calls.

Thank you!

Thank you Pieter van J - Good to know that the magic of technology will do some of the work for me!! I was going to store the number anyway to save me fumbling around in the dark upon arrival, finding specs and so on!!

When I was in Germany and called a taxi to get up the castle hotel I used the whole number with the + in front from my US phone (with the right int'l bands) and it worked.

Travel Tips for Venice

If you have the opportunity go...

by Linee

If you have the opportunity go during Carnival time. My second trip to Venice was on the end of the Carnival season. But I must say that even been born in Brazil, the Carnival in Venice is the best (it tights with ours). You just get involved. You see so many people dressed with different costumes! From children up to old couples! But be aware, do make reservations long time before Carnival. We decided to go at last minute but we were so lucky that we made great friends that hosted us better than a five star hotel. Buying myself a Carnival mask and just hangging out and dancing as well with my friends at the Piaza San Marco.

Highlights of any visit to Venice include St Mark¹s Square and Basilica, the colourful markets around the Ponte di Rialto, a trip on a gondola and hanging out in the cafes with terraces along the Grand Canal. There is a lot more to the city though, including a visit to the Isle of the Dead, where famous Venetians are buried, and the fishing island of Burano and the glass-making island Murano, where all those fragile trinkets you will see around the city are made.

Palazzo Pesaro

by Fam.Rauca

This palace is built in Baroque style with many columns at the windows and many building sculptures.

The plans of the imposing façade were made by the architect Baldassare Longhena, under the order of the Venice Doge Giovanni Pesaro.

The construction of the palace began in 1642 and the building was inaugurated in 1710, after 58 years.

The old architect dead in the year 1682, before the end of the construction, and the plans and the building were finished by Antonio Giaspari.

At the present, the Modern Art Museum (Galeria d’Arte Moderna) is here, in the inside of the palace, with numerous art collections from 19th century.

The Oriental Art Museum (Museo Orientale) is also here. A great attraction is the collection of Japanese Art, from the time period 1600-1868.
The Duke de Barbi brought these art pieces from Japan, in the 19th century, as he came back from there.

La Regatta and other Activities

by nicolettart

As part of the Redentore Festival there is the regatta, or boat race on the Giudecca Canal. The morning of the regatta we went to mass and then outisde to la Pesca per la Benificenza (raffle to benefit the church). There were some valuable prizes, and my mom actually won a small Murano chandelier.
All I won was a sponge. :-((

Packing List

by EllaB

Take a copy of J G Links' Venice for Pleasure. It is brilliant. To quote the blurb 'A guide book that has become a minor classic, remaining in print for over thirty years. Its simple object, in the author's own words, is to guide the reader to places he might otherwise miss and, having reached them, to tell him what he might wish to know and then leave him, preferably at a café, to admire, to enjoy, and perhaps be disappointed. The illustrations show the visitor, as he confronts a view, what his predecessors of a hundred, two hundred or five hundred years ago saw from the same point. The main part of the book describes four walks, each of which can be completed in one day, although there are points in each at which one can break off and return another day.'

The walks will take you all over Venice off the beaten track and will tell you all sorts of things you don't get from the standard guide books.
