Hidden Treasure
The Ca'Bauta is actually a private residence that was turned into a bed and breakfast type hotel. The staff are incredible and bent over backwards to be of assistance! We went to Venice with AAA reservations at a different hotel. Upon arrival it turned out they had never heard of us or AAA, nor did they have any rooms available. Needless to say we were extremely upset. The manager called her friend who owned Ca'Bauta and arranged for us to stay there. It was a bit further away from the square but work out beautifully. We were treated like royalty. They offer a continental breakfast each morning. There were no ice machines but when they realized I liked ice in my drinks they made some up and had it ready for me each day. The room we had (white comforter in the web photos) was very comfortable. The private bathroom had a toilet and bidet (great foot soaker after long days), and a small shower (no tub). The Ca'Bauta is almost hidden. We actually had to ask several people where it was. No one really knew. Fortunately one of the staff was out looking for us. It wasn't too hard to pick us out of the crowd. We were the ones with luggage looking really lost!
Unique Quality: The hotel staff was incredible. Don't expect a typical hotel. There is a common room with bedrooms around the perimeter. There is no pool or view. I'm not sure about handicap access. We had to walk up stairs to get to the lobby. I never saw an elevator. Also, if I were a child or teen, I probably would not enjoy the Ca'Bauta.
I would highly recommend it to adults who want a nice place to stay but aren't too concerned about the amenities. We were rarely there except to sleep.
Unless you have only one or two pieces of luggage you should plan on taking a water taxi to the hotel. We had several pieces and it costs us 50 Euro for the taxi. We talked them down from 75 Euro.
The walk to St. Mark's Square was about 15 minutes. Plan to walk everywhere! Oh yeah, get a multi-day bus pass. It was about 18 Euro's and you can go everywhere, including the islands. One more tip.... You will be offered a free boat ride to Murano Island to see the glass factories. Do it! Just make sure you have your bus pass before you go. They don't bring you back. If you don't have a pass it will cost you several Euro to get back.
We paid around 175 Euro's per night which is what we had planned to pay at the other hotel.
