Venice is home to some of the most expensive places for the budget backpacker. Trying to find something reasonable is not easy and take into account a budget and privacy and you are looking bare minimum of $150 + US easy. After some heavy research I found probably one of the best gems I have ever stayed at in any country anywhere. This hotel not only gives you privacy (double room shared bathroom) for 35 euros a night per person but the staff and location are unmatched bar none. The staff is amazing and you can walk to the Grand Canal or San Marco Square is less than 5 minutes. It is a bit tucked away but boy is it worth it. I will absolutely stay here again in the future.
Unique Quality: The old men working the front desk are so sweet and helpful and the privacy with canal views are incredible. Amazing atmosphere make this hotel one of top places I have ever had the pleasure of staying in.
Directions: At the end of this street you are in front of the church Santa Maria della FAVA . The hotel is into the street to right of the church
My mother and I stayed in in May 2003. We had room #36: twin beds, head-to-head with a table and lamp in between and the sink in one corner next to the window. The floor was crooked, so we had to make sure the closet door was shut tight so it wouldn't swing open.
There was a step up to the bathroom, which had an enclosed glass shower stall along with tile on the walls and floor. There was also a small t.v. in the corner.
It wasn't the prettiest room I've been in, but for 90 Euros (100 Euros if you use a credit card), the place was fine for us.
Unique Quality: The location was pertty good - just a short 5 minute walk to the Rialto bridge.
Directions: From the Rialto stop, walk up Larga Mazzini, 2nd left on Aprile; 1st right C. Stagneri; over the bridge; walk to the right of the church; hotel just at the next corner.
Great location, once you find it - make sure you have clear directions or you'll be wandering around for ages. Not a great experience, apart from convenience. Average facilities and service, but you get what you pay for. Ok rooms but nothing special. Not sure if we got clean towels or if they'd just been hung up to dry. Extremely rude and totally unhelpful owner (Gino?). Very pushy manager (Bruno?) who does the hard sell on his walking tours - about 41Euro. Just say no and keep moving! Tiniest shower cubicle, reasonably clean bathroom facilities. Canal is nice but very noisy so novelty wears off if you have a room on that side and you want to sleep. Go out for breakfast! Phone wouldn't work. Probem with booking - confirmed room with bathroom and none available when we arrived - more frustrating was owner's attitude towards us when we queried this. I wouldn't stay there again, despite convenient location.
Unique Quality: Very convenient location
Probably one of the less expensive hotels on a canal
Location, location, location. Thats what i want to stress about this hotel. If you are looking for a hotel right in the middle of Venice. (2 minute walk to Rialto bridge, 8 minute walk to San Marco Square) then this is the hotel you have been looking for. 80 percent of the rooms over look the canal, and i wish i could remeber what room number we were in cause it over looked a T in the canal where it split.
The canal is always busy with gondolas passing by and traffic from water taxis and boats doing there morning deliverys.
I highly recommend the Caneva if you are looking for something that puts you just minutes from everything...
88 Euros
Unique Quality: Most rooms overlook a frequented little canal by gondolas. The staff can speak English and some other European languages. Private bath with shower. The price for the location is great.
Hotel Caneva (1 star) Our double room was spacious, 2 big beds, hair-dryer, clean bathroom, lots of light and a little wooden window that had a small view of the one of many small bridges. The service was good and we stocked up on Nutella! The only problem is that you need to be able to read a map in order to find this place as it's not on any main strip, but it's close to San Marco, but far enough that it's quiet.

Unique Quality: Single room: 40,000 - 120,000 [ITL]; Double room: 60,000 - 170,000 [ITL]
