A room with a view
We stayed at the Hotel Continental for 4 nights during our trip to Venice in June 2003. Hotel Continental is a 3 star hotel located near the train station in Venice. We stayed at room 114.
Location
We arrived by train in Venice and when we got out of the train station I found Venice just the way that I Had imagined it to be: sunny, Canal Grande, lots of boats and lots of tourist. Fortunately the hotel is not very far from the train station so after a 5 minute walk we were there. The hotel didn’t look very impressive on the outside. It looked grayish and some of the building was covered due to construction work. But the hotel is located by the shore of Canal Grande and it is close to the vaporetto stop (vaporetto is the boat “bus” that goes up and down Canal Grande) and close to Scalzi bridge (bridge crossing Canal Grande from Cannaregio to Santa Croce/San Polo)
In the hotel area you will find lots of shops, restaurants, internet cafes, a laundry place, ice cream shops, markets, mask shop and so on.
Reservation
According to the guide book you have to book a hotel pretty early when going to Italy. We didn’t plan it very well so we didn’t book a hotel until 1 week before we left for Italy. When booking this late you either get something that is really bad or something that is a bit expensive. I guess you can say that we got a hotel room that was pretty expensive because we paid 150 € per night including breakfast. We booked the hotel room using http://www.holidaycity.com
The lobby at the hotel was small but with air condition so it was really nice to get inside. We had 35 degrees Celsius on some days and I guess that explains why I appreciated the air-con J The people working at the front desk where polite and spoke several languages (Italian, English, Spanish). In the lobby we also found different newspapers (USA Today). The hotel has 107 rooms by the way.
Unique Quality: The room
When we got to the hotel the porter carried our luggage to our room and we were excited when he headed for the room located on the canal side. And we did get a room with a view to Canal Grande at it was very nice. We had two large windows facing the canal and 1 window in the bathroom which didn’t have much of a view.
The room was not tiny as I had expected it to be. Instead we got a room that was above average in size. The room had a carpet, a king size bed (which was a bit too hard for me), a sofa, two chairs and a small table, a wardrobe with a few hangers, a small color TV (with quite a few German, Italian and English channels…but with a remote that wasn’t really working that well) and a small safe. With the air condition in the room we could control the temperature. The only thing that would have been nice to have was a small minibar.
The bathroom we got had tiles and included toilet, bide and a bathtub. The only problem with the bathtub was that there was no shower curtain and we ended up splashing water all over the floor when taking a shower. Apart from this there was a hair dryer mounted on the wall and little bars of soaps and shampoo in small bags.
The breakfast
Breakfast was included and we enjoyed this every day. When it comes to warm stuff the hotel offered scrambled eggs, boiled eggs and bacon. And they had a toast machine and a selection of both white and dark bread. And with toast you get a selection of jam, honey, cheese and ham of course. They also had quite a selection of sweet stuff. Apart from this there was a couple of choices when it comes to cereal and they also had canned fruit mix which I enjoyed. They had a few choices of juice but it wasn’t great. And we got tea or coffee served at the table.
When we were there they were doing some sort of construction work on the outside of the hotel and it got pretty noisy in the breakfast room area.

Loved It!
Although the hotel was not as modern as many tourists would like, I found it very charming. Navigating the halls was similar to walking an old labyrinth. The staff was warm and welcoming. Our room was GORGEOUS! It overlooked the Grand Canal. Every morning we would awake and throw open the huge shutters and watch Venice awakening. the bathroom was large and sparkling clean. Friends had another room with a poor view - one that faced another old building but still, it was clean and it was in Venice after all. The buildings are old. The dampness has a profound effect on the buildings and although there were some minor repairs that could have been made, they did not take away from the charm of the hotel.
Unique Quality: Panoramic View of Canal, within walking distance of train. Internet cafe across the street. Good restaurant

Facing the River
The room is very cosy and it faces the river. It also have a nice restaurant and serves decent breakfast. You can choose to sit by the river for your meals. They always have a wide range of reading materials which I like it very much.
Unique Quality: I like the room as it is big and cosy. The breakfast is good. It also offers you a wide range of entrees for dinner.

Great Location
I had a nice room facing the Gran Canal and even if something was not perfect, I think that this hotel is a good 3 star hotel and you can get a reduced price if you book directly from their website (as i did).
Unique Quality: Even if the majority of people seeks a central location (Rialto or San Marco) where anything is more expencive I would reccomend this hotel because is close to the railwaystation and it's in the middle of Canareggio neighborhood a.k.a. the "real venetian neighborhood" beacuse is packed of nice trattorias and bares. Morover, it's located a stone's trow from the Jewish ghetto and the "Fondamenta degli Ormesini" a street that gets crowded during the night because of its wide range of Meeting points

Hotel Continental Venice - Awful Hotel
This was the worst hotel we have ever been to. The staff was rude. The rooms were small and dirty and the hotel itself was old and run-down. The food wasn't very good, and the air conditioning didn't work. There was no business center or gift shop or gym.
Aside from the location, which was decent, there is no reason at all to stay here.
Unique Quality: Nothing. There were no good features of this hotel. Yes, it is on the canal, but there are only a handful of rooms overlooking it. The rest overlook an alley.

Our stay was fine!!!
Ok, all i hear about this hotel is bad stuff, whcih is so uncanny! Our stay was perfect!!! we must have been reall lucky. It is in a great location, close to station (far from St. Marks and the Rialto Bridge, but you cant have both: for carrying luggage, take a hotel close to the station, the canal bridges are not made for suitcases). I realise that the hotel has undergone major renovation and we recieved a renovated room, clean, comfortable (no odour) and roomy. We were on the street side, which explains why we had no sewage smell. The setup is weird, the hotel mus have bout the neigboring building, which is older and the steps setup is complicated, and i suppost that side had the bad rooms. If you will go to the hotel, ask for a street side room, which has a nice but still quite quiet nightlife, but no smell...You can take the risk, i think we were just lucky!!!

Great place to stay
In spite of a number of negative reviews Maritha and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay at the Continental.
It was conveniently situated about 200m from the railway station and had an old world charm to it. (If you're looking for a glitsy place to stay then this is not for you)
We were given a large room with a balcony overlooking the Grand Canal and the only fault we could find was that the bath needed reglazing. Other than that the room and bathroom were clean and tidy.
A warning for those going down to breakfast - beware of the pidgeons - never leave your table unattended or you'll return to find dozens of birds helping themselved to your food!
Unique Quality: Fantastic view of the Grand Canal, excellent location and a real gem.

Re: Experience with Hotel Continental Venice
Hi Gard. We stayed there in 1999. It's an old building, as all the hotels in Venice city are, converted to a hotel. The rooms are small, the shower is very small...but, it was very clean, the staff were good, the breakfasts were good, and it's in a great location.
Re: Experience with Hotel Continental Venice
I didn't stay there but I did see it. Like almost all Venice hotels, you pay well over the odds because it is in Venice. It will probably not be up to the standard of room that you will get in many other places worldwide for that money, but that's the way it is in venice.
Enjoy your trip - Venice is just about my favourite place.
Re: Experience with Hotel Continental Venice
i do not have experience with this hotel, although i stayed at the principe which is just across the litte campiello from the continental. also suggest you do a search on google by the name/city and you will come up with several sites that can show you photos and other info. it's a good area - near the ferrovia vaporetto stop so you can get everywhere you want to go. can suggest a very good restaurant very near - Trattoria Tre Gobbi (3 hunchbacks) average cost for venice, good food whether the prix fixe or ala carte menu, friendly service, pretty place with an outdoor garden. the mussels marinara are excellent altho i found the liver venetian style (fegatto alla veneziana) a little tough. it's across the street from the principe hotel. tell them the 2 crazy sisters from NY recommended it. have a great time - it's a fabulous city
