'Carneval in Venice' is a Must
by globetrott
'Carneval in Venice' is really great ! ! !
B U T : If you dont come to see the carneval come here any OTHER TIME of the Year !
It is absolutely crowded, often the 'traffic of walking people' is stuck for half an hour, and nobody could tell you why! You cannot go on and cannot go back in these small streets! I really enjoyed that special kind of Carneval - its not like laughter at every corner, but sophisticated, great costumes, a certain melancholic atmosphere...
You should try it !!!
Pigeons all around..
by tomeek
Along with gondolas, pigeons are another "trade mark" of Venice! There are thousands of them, all around you! If you want to experience what Tammy has, feeding them from hands (or, better to say, from all over you!), nearby you can get a portion of corn, as soon as piggens see that in your hands, you are theirs! :-)
Give yourself at least two...

Give yourself at least two full days to absorb the essence of Venice. Don't you dare make it a quickie! The first time is what you will most likely remember if you plan on visiting more than once. Standing with my wife in different locations of Piazza San Marco at 10:30pm when almost all the tourists were gone, listening to the live music at 3 different cafes, and hearing the waves ever so lightly in the background and seeing the full moon come and go as the clouds passed by it.
When you need to go...

...you need to go. But I didn't see too many public toilets in Venice. Close to San Marco there are some, but they are only open during the day, from 10 in the morning to 7 in the evening.
Be sure to have some coins to open them.
Another toilet is in the train station, when you enter the area of the platforms, they are on the right side. Again, you have to pay.
PACK LIGHT!

Keep in mind that Venice is an island that you cannot drive into. You WILL have to carry all of your luggage around with you. Make sure you keep this in mind when packing. I learned the first time I was there, and it made the next times that much easier! Perhaps Boots, depending on when you go, if there is aqua alta!
