Prima.

Attempt to find somewhere to stay on Venice proper. Forget the Lido, Guidecca or Mestre as these will ensure that you have to leave the island early so you can get home....the real magic happens as the color falls. There are so many to mention. They all envolve feeling. This is the very essence of the place. A whisper here and a footstep there. Long sunny afternoons drawing the canals...a girl comes and gives a flower. At the break of winter and as dusk huddles inwards, the old gas lights flood the misty streets with dim nonchalance. An occaisonal shout runs by. 'lotteria! lotteria!' Everyone knows him.
On A Chilly Wintry Morning At The PIAZZA S. MARCO

Ah... that's my sister standing next to the gondolas parked along the GRAND CANAL. She looked like she needed a hot cup of coffee :-)
My sister was there with her own group of friends during the CARNIVAL.
Castello Campo

Amongst the back alleys of Castello you will suddenly open out into this quiet campo. The church seen here is the Chieas di San Francesco della Vigna - a Franciscan church with a colonaded closister. I like the little tower above it with the 3 bells - nice architectural detail - see other pic.
Where Do They Keep All Those Boats?
by tpal
I have to admit that both Carol and I are closet voyeurs. We love getting a peek in behind the slightly ajar door or the undraped window. We don't climb over fences or use a telescope but if we are walking by and a glimpse of real life presents itself...we need to take a look.
Our hotel in Venice was located in Dorsoduro so on the night we arrived we decided to stay local. It was a perfect evening so we headed for the Zattere, the quayside which runs along the southern edge of Dorsoduro. It was along here that by law, in the 17th century, all the wood that came to Venice was to be unloaded. Consequently, most of the buildings along here are warehouse structures now adaptively reused for a variety of purposes.
As we walked along we observed a man washing off a small boat at the edge of the promenade and...he was working outside an open doorway. To quote Howard Carter to Lord Carnarvon, a peek inside revealed "...wonderful things!". Stacked like dinner plates on a rack was a spectacular array of wooden boats. With the permission of the gentleman outside we went in for a better look. The boats were beautifully finished and clearly well cared for. They were variations of gondolas and other Venetian regatta racing boats. On the side wall was a collection of forcole (the oarlocks used on gondolas), woodworking tools and even a straw gondoliers hat. This was a boating inner sanctum.
Winter colds
by maritoni
Bring your medicines and cough syrup especially if you are not accustomed to the cold weather. It was in Nov and I developed the colds - maybe from germs from the EURail plus the weather factor. It is so warm (heater at max) inside the trains, hotels, but once you go out, it is sooo cold... body temps change in an instant..
