Venice and surrounds suitable for wheelchair user

by karenmillen

I am flying to Venice Treviso in May with my elderly father - would be grateful for suggestions of a resort in the area which is suitable for a wheelchair - will have a car so no need to rely on public transport. Will probably just take a day trip to Venice because from what I remember from my last visit there were lots of steps and cobble stones so would prefer to stay elsewhere.

Sadly Venice is not set up for wheelchairs, even the new Calatrava pedestrian bridge that goes from the parking lot Piazzale Roma to the center have no ramp. I know they are working on it but still not possible to roll anything there. You even have to pick up your suitcase to walk it. Not to mention the other hundreds of bridge.

If you are interested to explore the Veneto Area I can suggest you Padova as a base, the traffic is not too bad, except for commuters' time, and it is kind of in the middle.

You can reach Verona in one hour, Vicenza in 40 minutes, the Alps in 90 minutes.
If you are interested in Veneto take a look to the Veneto section of my Travel map and also here:

If you want to show your father what Venice is like going to a place more wheelchair friendly take him to Chioggia. It is a fishing village on the Venice Lagoon, very close to the popular beach resort Sottomarina.

to get an idea how they look like.

My eyes can't see my errors. Please understand.and forgive
This is an question dear to me because I walk on wood and Venice is tough for the disabled. The bridges are serious obsicals, but some can be got around and the Comune has made an effort to deal with it. So tha the Tourist Board.
Go to the Tourist webste and look for INFORMAHANDICAP. there is a free folder of maps with accessible routes which i respect.
There ia (was) ONE taxi (water) that had a lift to accomadate wheelchairs.
The chair lidts at six bridges are unreliable and there were no phone nos to call to say when they were not working.
For a day trip I woud drive into Venice , park near Piazzale Roma and take the vapporetto to where you want to go. Check out your plan wtih informahandicap before going. Especially about recharging.
Please call me or have me call yoy (I have unlimietd calling)

Travel Tips for Venice

The joys of living without cars!

by Jefie

At some point during the trip, as we were having lunch watching boats go by on a busy canal, Sylvain and realized exactly what it was we enjoyed so much about Venice: there are no cars in the city! Had we been anywhere else in the world, instead of the canal there would have been a busy street full of cars and trucks. The fact that there are no roads in Venice makes for such a soothing atmosphere, sometimes you don't even realize how peaceful it is until you go back home (or in our case, arrive in Florence!). I truly missed the feeling of being surrounded by water during the rest of our trip - next time, I'll make sure to save Venice for last!

In Venice, you must visit...

by elaine2u

In Venice, you must visit Murano (a small island in Venice) and see how experienced glass craftsmen mold/make glass in the Murano Glassmaking Factory. Tip: when you visit, just be careful you don't bump into displays (I almost did - wheww).

ascend a height on the bell...

by Andrew_Liu

ascend a height on the bell tower on St.Marco Square to enjoy a distant view of all Venice city. Brilliant palaces, wide Grand Canal, beautiful St. Marco Square, vast Adriatic Sea, all these make up the famous water city-Venice. But it was reported that Venice is being in danger!
Most of souvenir buildings have been eroded by the waves making by boats on the Grand Canal. The beautiful St.Marco Square is often submerged by tidewater of Adriatic Sea. People can only walked carefully through the square passing on many narrow plates building temporarily one by one.
Some news said the government intends to build several dykes linking each island to turn the lagoon into a big lake. Of course it's a great plan. I don't know how about it now. I believe Italian will do something about this after saving the Inclined Tower of Pisa .

BASILICA OF SAN MARCO

by Sharrie

Explore the BASILICA OF SAN MARCO - the 'great temple' of Venice, the monumental symbol not only of the State Church but political power as well. It's here that newly elected doge was acclaimed & blessed when leading the ships & armies of the republic into war. We did not make it inside as there was a long queue & it was very close to closing hour. So, I'll definitely be back one day!

Does anybody have a good idea?

by csordila

Venice differs in many things from the rest of the world.
Looking at the picture I think, the wellknown slogan about the "Proletarians of all countries...." should differ here too! Does anybody have a good idea?
