A city of waterways
by sswagner
Naturally, someone should not go to Venice without seeing Piazzo San Marco. What makes Venice so unique is its waterways. Since there are no cars beyond the end of the causeway, one must take a boat of some sort to cover longer distances in this city. The Grand Canal is the single most important waterway. It starts from train station and works its way towards Piazza San Marco. I enjoyed taking the vaporetto up and down this waterway between the hotel and other sites. It gives you a different perspective of this city. The best thing about Venice is that all of it is impressive. In most cities, you have your good parts and your bad parts. It seemed like anywhere you went, it was beautiful. There is little evidence of modernization (other than the boats) on the main island. It is like stepping back through time. While there are single important sites spread throughout Venice, the whole city itself becomes one large attraction.
Stay a While!

To really experience Venice, we made it a point to stay the night. Venice is completely different once the day-trippers leave. It transforms into the quaint town it is meant to be, and not some kind of Disneyland. We had the canals to ourselves. We wandered the neighborhoods and talked to the locals.
This is the way to remember Venice.

Merchant of Venice
by fishandchips
With Venice's history requiring most of its food and water to be brought in, a group of savvy merchants soon developed. Much has been recorded about them even including a play by Shakespeare.
When you are in Venice nothing is a problem when needing to have items mailed or shiped or transported wherever you want. The Venetian merchant network appears to extend all over the world. A visit to the ubiquitous glass merchant will give you quick proof of this as they have a well defined and planned shipping network.
The map of Venice in the Vatican musuem reflects the transport of goods theme with its inclusion of ships. I took the photo during the same trip but several days after I had wandered around the Island city of Venice.

The monastery of San Francesco is adjacent to the church of San Francesco della Vigna. It has the courtyard built in the typical monastery style, colonade porticoes with the well in its centre. It houses, from time to time, the exibitions of the local contemporary artists.
