    Memorial Venice Stay

We had a wonderful room right on the canal. Our package included a first class meal, free trip to a casino and a Milano glass factory. The staff was very accomadating and helpful. Free boat transportation was also provided. Highly recommended

Unique Quality: The garden at this hotel was a lovely retreat. The Lagoon was breathtaking.. This hotel is away from tourist areas and "far from the maddening crowd" -- peaceful and quiet. The walk to the tourists areas was easy.

Directions: The hotel is in the Canareggio district.

Dei Dogi was fabulous!

by TripAdvisor Member Skippy64

We were upgraded to a jr suite facing the canal. This hotel is incredible. It is in a quiet area of town which is what we wanted. It is near the public boat stop however this hotel had it's own boat and a schedule to take it's guests to and from St. Marks Square. Stay away from the water taxi's they are expensive. This boat service was complimentary of the hotel but of course had limited hours. You could walk to the Rialto bridge in 15 minutes and to St. Marks Square in 25.... The hotel has a great garden restaurant where they had complimentary breakfast.... Great choice if you want peace and quiet away from all the tourists and noise in a 5 star luxury hotel.

Wonderful Boscolo Grand Hotel dei Dogi

by TripAdvisor Member maggie1030

Was in Venice from 8/10/04 - 8/15/04. The hotel was awesome - beautiful chandeliers in the lobby, not to mention an enjoyable daily buffet breakfast in the garden. The hotel staff was quite friendly and helpful, and although the location was "out-of-the-way", it was great to be around the residential streets - to get a taste of the way of life in that area of Venice - away from the tourists. Highly recommend the Boscolo!

Hidden Treasure

by SabrinaSummerville about Taverna dei Dogi

Our tour guide for the day suggested that we might all like to meet up for dinner at a little taverna he often eats at, and this is how we discovered Taverna dei Dogi. if he hadn't lead us there we would never ever have found it, hidden as it is in an alleyway that can comfortably fit people walking only in single it was dark!

Once inside the antique looking building you will be delighted to find a typically Venetian interior complete with friezes on the wall and oak beamed ceiling.

Tables are grouped in long rows, sort of school dinner style, but rather than make it formal and fussy it encourages you to strike up conversation with your table companions. We were seated beside four Italians and I found it a great opportunity to practice my very shaky Italian and one of the Italian men had a similarly enjoyable chance to speak English which he learned in school forty or more years ago. We had the best of fun! Our tour guide had arranged a special limited choice menu which cost around Euro 16 per person for starter, main course and dessert. If you wanted to add drinks they were incredibly cheap - Euro 2 for a litre of sparkling water and Euro 16 for a litre of sparkling Italian prosecco (wine).

I started with spaghetti with clam sauce which was very yummy indeed, proceeded to a mixed deep fried fish selection (whitebait, baby octopus, calamari rings and prawns), and finished with fruit and ice cream. What a true bargain for sixteen euro!

Swimming in Venice

by suvanki

While wandering around Giudecca on Christmas Day, I came to its mainly residential area.

I crossed the small Bridge off the square near the church, which took me onto Sacca Fissola, and here I came across a public swimming pool - Piscine Comunali Rari Nantes (Public Swimming Pool) Sacca Fisola, Venezia.
It was Christmas day, so was closed.

There is another Public Swimming pool in Canaregio (I'm not sure if this is an indoor or open pool)

Piscine Comunali Rari Nantes
(Public Swimming Pool)
Cannaregio 3161 - S. Alvise, Venezia
Phone: 041 713567

So, if your hotel doesn't have a swimming pool - (Cipriani, Molino Stucky, Boscolo Luxury Grand, Hotel Dei Dogi, Bauer Hotel , Hotel Santa Marina are 4 that do have pools) and you don't want to trek over to the beaches of the Lido, these are 2 options!
I'm not sure if any of these hotels are open to the public.

Swimming in Bacino San Marco and the canals etc is forbidden. I seem to remember that swimming in public pools in Italy, requires wearing a swimming cap.

Superb hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Bob1949

Stayed at the Dei Dogi for four nights in mid August. It was an oasis of calm after the bustle of the city. Total luxury, from the stunning public rooms to the huge de luxe bedroom with drapes and real venetian touches. A short walk to good restaurants and the vaporetto stop only two minutes stroll away. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit. The only complaint is why, at 5* prices, do they not even give complementary coffee in the morning when staying on a room only basis. A real gem in a quiet but accessible area.

Paradise beckons

First time in Venice. We are 5 star travellers with a Ritz Carlton taste in hotels. We checked out the Cipriani but no amount of surfing could reduce the £500 bog standard room without breakfast tariff. Tripadvisor reviews put us off too but I would still have loved to have swam in their pool.
We then researched San Clemente (sorry darlings but it has to be 5* for a serious holiday - backpackers not!) and were sorely tempted until we espied the Dei Dogi 'Let's Celebrate' package. 223 euros a night for bed and breakfast and dinner on the second night. (per couple) Available from Buscolo hotels own website. It's often worth contacting the hotel direct rather than surf - trudging around expedia/last minute etc
We did 4 nights.
Unlike the Cip and San which are on their own islands Dei Dogi was just fine in terms of getting about and only 4 bridges away from the hustle and bustle. Don't pay too much attention to the distance whines in previous reviews.
The hotel provides a regular free boat service to St Mark's square (make sure you stand on the jetty to attract your driver's attention on the way back) and has the most magnificent garden dotted with fountains and really tasteful statues. It is the key feature of the hotel and you will step into your very own Eden. (not the Ibiza night club!)
The staff are superb there, our cocktail waiter(Alexandro) not only served the meanest Cosmopolitans but was a genius with fresh white peach Bellinis.
The rooms (we didn't succeed in an upgrade) are well air conditioned (we keep our hotel rooms like an ice palace) although the bathroom was small by 5* standards. The breakfast scrambled eggs are of a world class quality but the orange juice was not fresh and of a 'Robinsons' variety (best orange juice in the world - hotel gran marina Barcelona!)
It's a happening modern hotel, big gay convention one night, TV documented Bah Mitzvah French occasion the following night.
Fillet steaks and rack of lamb highly recommended, table d'hote menu a trifle disappointing unless you are a fan of daintily presented flavourless european food.
Venice is possibly the most beautiful city in all the world and if you likes yer art then the Peggy Guggenheim collection is the gallery from heaven.
Spirit of the City, Spirit of Venice, we will certainly be back. Bring your Autan, Venice does not smell unpleasant like we feared but there are crafty mozzies shimmering about.
Dei Doge is a tranquil 5* affordable treasure. Not the Arts in Barcelona but a very fine hotel nevertheless.

Simply luxurious!

This is the nicest hotel my husband & I have ever stated at. Upon our arrival, we discovered that our travel agent had cancelled our reservation accidentally. The staff were fabulous. They assured us they had room, toured us around the hotel to pick the room we wanted, arranged a trip to the Murano Glass factory...The hotel itself is gorgeous. It's located in a quite area. You will want for nothing. Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this hotel! - Definitely recommend it!

by TripAdvisor Member andrealea

What a beautiful hotel with a perfect location! The room exceeded my expectations and the service was outstanding. I was with my young daughter and felt so safe in Venice and this hotel. We walked to everything we wanted to see and even felt secure coming back after dark. Pretty much everything closed at 7:30pm. Valporetto service just around the corner. Hotel has complimentary shuttle service to St. Mark's square and the Murano Glass Factory. Hotel grounds and gardens are beautiful. We did not eat at the restaurant because we were gone most of the time, but I recommend trying the Trattoria Pizzeria da Gioia during your stay - fish specialties, 30124 S. Marco. People there are wonderful. We both decided this hotel is a wonderful place to come back to - and hope to someday.

For two recent college grads....5 star was pretty impressive!

by TripAdvisor Member zautumn boyfriend and I stayed here in early March of 2004 after just graduating from college. It was the first stop in about 35 different hotels over the course of 3 months and we were impressed. Towel warmers in the bathroom and of course, very, very ventitian decour. However, for a five star room, it was a bit small. We did enjoy the canal view and the free shuttle to Murano (eventhough we didn't buy a thing!) However, I should note that we got this room at an AMAZING rate on a hotel website ($140/night for 5 nights). I don't know if I would pay more for it. We returned to Venice at the end of our trip and paid 60 euro for a room that was great too.

Anyone stayed at the dei Dogi hotel in Venice?

by Lana5

I've read good and bad reviews about the dei Dogi hotel in Venice. Has anyone stayed there? What experience did you have? Thanks for any and all advice!

I must say that we have never stayed at the Hotel Dei Dogi, but we go to Venice on a regulare basis and have made friends with lots of locals. The word on the street is that this hotel is getting a little frayed at the edges and so are the staff. There seems to be a lack of investment in this property at present.
If you are already unsure, then perhaps its best if you find another hotel.
Venice is a beautiful place but can easily be ruined by a bad hotel experience.
Good luck

We stayed at the Metropole and found it clean, very attentive staff, and good breakfast buffet. It's close to the San Zaccaria stop, easy access from the Santa Lucia station. Also close access from the Alilaguna shuttle from the airport.
