We stayed at Graspo de Ua for three nights in the summer of 2008. The rooms are small and the hotel is very short is space. There is no view from the windows. All of that is tolerable, but what makes us recommend that you avoid this hotel is the staff. Mr. Gianni, the manager, is rude and ill-mannered; you should watch out for your money when you make deals with him. We asked him to book a taxi to the airport and he quoted us a "minimum" price that turned out to be 40% higher than what we got when we went to the Canal Grande and booked the taxi ourselves! He then tried to refuse to cancel the taxi reservation that he had mad at 40% higher cost! Similarly, he booked a tour of Venice for us at a cost higher than what we would have found ourselves at the office in Piazza San Marco. And he did not accept credit cards, only cash! Clearly, he is connetced with a newtork of people in Venice who rely on him to get money from tourists. If you are concerned about not being ripped off, do not stay at Graspo de Ua.
Unique Quality: Closeness to Rialto Bridge and San Marco square
Directions: near Rialto bridge
Though it was really hard to find, being so close to Rialto Bridge but down a hidden street, once we found it, it was great. We walked many stairs to a double room that was unique, air-conditioned, with its own bathroom.
Unique Quality: The room had little touches of Murano glass and was nicely decorated. The only downfall was the shower -- very low pressure and hard to rinse your shampoo out.
Directions: At Rialto Bridge on the St. Mark's side, down a tiny hidden street bridge and little square close to bridge.
