It's trully a challencing question -> "How to find a suitable place to stay in Venice?". As you can imagine there are so many, many hotels, B&B's, hostels, et cetera. How to choose? We did some surfing over the internet when we were planning our trip at home, We searched for B&B's and found quite a few we liked. We sended them all an email asking about availability and the only one that answered was Residenza Al Pozzi. So finally, it was an easy decision to make :)!
Residenza Al Pozzo lies in the San Polo sestiere, which is the smallest one of Venice, but it's also the second most important area of the city in terms of historical importance and attractions for the visitors of Venice. To be exact, the Residenza Al Pozzo is situated at the sunny Campo San Polo (San Polo Square). When we arrived in Venice we were lucky that Michele was so nice to pick us up from the bus terminal Piazzale Roma and even carried some bags for us!
Maybe the entrance of the B&B isn't really inviting, but once inside it's quite a different picture. The entire guest house has been furnished in that typical Venetian baroque style, a joy for the eye. The room we had was rather large and also comfortable with a tv and bathroom present. What else did we need?
Unique Quality: The breakfast, no doubt about that! We received the first one in our room and it was quite rich with coffee, tea, hot backed bread, eggs, et cetera. We also enjoyed a breakfast at the sunny flowered terrace from which we could see the Belltower of the Basilica dei Frari.
Directions: Right at the south western side of the Campo San Polo.
Very small guesthouse (9rooms) run by local venetian family.. located in Cannareggio area....very friendly and reasonably priced, esp so for Venice. Rooms are clean and quiet despite being very close to the 'main drag'. Located very close to San Marcuola vaporetto stop on Grand Canal or 10 mins walk from railway station. Has nice quiet courtyard, garden, you get tokens to go to local bakery for a coffee and pastry for brekkie. Highly recommend this place, owners are v nice too.
We booked over the net, just do a search and al portico features on several websites.
Directions: From San Marcuala: Follow the street ahead &turn left. Then right through"Calle Seconda del Cristo". At the end turn right. You will find a small square, in front of you there's an alley called "Sotoportego del Pegoloto".The entrance is there.
The path to this guesthouse is quite daunting as it is in a building down a narrow and dirty alley. (Remember to press the correct doorbell!) The room is very simply furnished and you will share a bathroom together with 4 other rooms. Hot shower is provided. The place may be rather old but the owner kept the rooms clean and tidy.
Unique Quality: The main catch is that it is within walking distance from Santa Lucia train station and it is cheap, compared with other Venice accomodations.
Directions: From Santa Lucia train station, turn left, following the Grand Canal. Do not cross the big station bridge, just walk straight along Lista di Spagna for around 200m. You will need to turn right into a small alley (Calle del Forno) after Hotel Continental.
In May 2005 I spent one night alone in Venice, on my way to the huge European VT Meeting in Verona.
As I was arriving in Venice latish in the Friday night and departing again in the morning, I wanted to stay somewhere close to the train station.
Whilst researching I came across Hotel Santa Lucia, which was very close to the station, looked nice and clean (well, from the website anyway) and had a room available.
Unique Quality: The hotel was only about 2 minutes from the train station. I had a single room - plenty big enough for me, which had a bed, desk, wardrobe and TV. It was clean and modern. The very clean share bathroom was just across the hallway. The man on reception was friendly and helpful.
Although I left too early for breakfast in the morning, there was a cute courtyard where you can enjoy breakfast and plan your day.
It wasn't the cheapest place to stay in the area - there are cheaper, but it was convenient for me, and safe and clean.
Directions: "When you go out from the Railway Station, please turn on the left towards "Lista di Spagna" and after about 50 meters you take the second street on the left - then walk towards the end to Calle della Misericordia number 358."
This is a nice little place just perfect for the budget-minded traveler in Venice. The owner is so friendly and accommodating. It is clean and safe. Easily accessed by the Vaporetto in a less touristy area of Venice.
There are two room types: superior rooms are larger in size, with internal/en-suite bathrooms with shower and are air-conditioned, standard are smaller double rooms, each with their own private (non-shared) bathroom with shower next door to the room. They are airconditioned too.
A very modest breakfast consisting of a tray delivered to the room of coffee/tea with croissants, cake and biscuits is included in the price.
I would definitely recommend this place to someone traveling to Venice on a budget. It is a great deal.
Unique Quality: Friendly owner, quiet and clean rooms.
Directions: located in Calle del Campaniel, past the bell tower
Located in Calle del Campaniel just past the bell tower
By Vaporetto number 1, get off at the S. Toma stop
This hotel was beautiful! I took a group of 12 to Italy and this hotel gave us the best rates. The staff doesn't speak a lot of English but I had no problems communicating with them.
Unique Quality: Each room has a small balcony that over looks an alley, but it was so nice to stand out there and listen to the quiet of the night. The shower was amazing! The water in Venice is piped in from the mountains so it is clear and refreshing.
Directions: About a 5 minute walk from the railway station.. 2 minutes from a water taxi stand. Don't follow the address according to a map. After you leave the station, walk along the main street with all the shops. Watch for a sign for the hotel on the left.
We found a recommendation for Locanda al Leon in Karen Brown's guide, liked it's location and booked reservations for 3 nights in March. The owner gave us what we felt were great rates ( 90 Euros, much less than the published prices).
I can't sing enough high praises for this little get-away. If you are looking for a romantic, authentic Venetian, hideaway in Venice.. this is it. It's a stone's throw from St. Marks..
The service was top rate, the owners and all staff were warm , hospitable and went beyond the call of duty. Our luggage did not arrive at the airport with our flight, and had to be delivered to the hotel later. The owner made sure he contacted the airport several times on our behalf to check on it, and keep us updated.
Unique Quality: Typical venetian furnishings, including chandeliers from Murano.
The owners, Giuliano and his wife are wonderful.
Directions: San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. Calle Albanese is between the old prison and Hotel Danieli. It's the last door on the left, before you get to Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo
