Venice to Salzburg

by PamRay

Hi,
Can anyone advise on how to get from the Port of Venice (cruise terminal) to the S.Lucia Station, we want to catch a train to Salzburg on either the 13th or 14th May 2011. We dock at 7:45am and the 1st train leave at 9:20am do you think we would have time to catch this train or should we aim for the 11:20am train.
Is it possible to walk - if so how long does it take, I believe the water taxi's are very expensive!
Also if we decide to stay overnight, can anyone suggest accommodation near the station that is not expensive.
Thanks Pam

The Port Authority provides a free bus service from the ship docks to Piazzale Roma which is very close to the train station- you get to walk over the new Calatrava bridge and there you are. While you could possibly make the 9:20 departure, it would probably be better to plan on getting the later train to lessen the stress, IMO. I haven't stayed at any hotel near there but in previous posts in this forum some have been recommended, browse through them.

By complete and total serendipity, both rail solutions from Venice to Salzburg that you refer to actually consist of a bus from Venice to Villach, then a train from Villach to Salzburg. So what, you say? Well, buses don't leave from the St. Lucia train station, they leave from Piazzale Roma(!).

This means that if indeed there is a free shuttle from the docks to Piazzale Roma, all you need to do is find the bus there and hop on.

Now, I don't know if there is a ticket office at Piazzale Roma. I'll look, but I have work to do for the Official Spousal Unit, so I've got to go...worst case, one of you sits with the luggage while the other walks over to the station to buy the tickets...

For the OBB intercity bus you can buy tickets online (and save you some money) by going here:
www.oebb.at
You can buy tickets there and print them out yourself.
Better than going to the Trenitalia ticket counter.

Oh, good for you! That's a new service that started in April of this year...see http://www.asmvenezia.it/index_eng.html
and click on "video" to see a three minute video of the "trenino" (little train), called "People Mover"...the video is in Italian, but you'll get an eyeful of the train and the stations...

It goes from Piazzale Tronchetto near the docks to the train station, then Piazzale Roma (seems like the wrong order, but that's what they say ;-) )...

That's a nice improvement since the last time I was there.
FWIW, here's a comprehensive report on how to use it in English:

Later train because even though you are docked, you do not get off the ship until they can clear customs and imirgration, so the later is the better Cheers tommy x

Travel Tips for Venice

Left Luggage

by lifeisatrip

One can leave luggage in Piazzale Roma (next to Pulman Bar) for €4/luggage. Look for the sign "Deposito Bagagli". There is also a left luggage in Sta Lucia train station near track 1. The charge is €4/luggage for the first 5 hours, then €0.60 for each additional hour. Hours: 6:00 a.m. to 12 midnight.

I think that every corner of VENEZIA is intresting
I go there every year and I can see something different every time last year I went in VENEZIA with friends to have a drink in S.Marco place at midnight
I phoned home and record in my answering machine the bell tower song
is strange that but when I come back home I close my eyes and I thought to be in venice with this song

Grand Canal

Grand canal View: every building an architectural gem. The number 1 vaporetto goes the slow route through the Grand Canal from Piazzale Roma (worthwhile getting on here for a front stage view) to the Lido.

go to the Murano island. It is famous for its glass. By the way, you can see how vases are made (it is absolutely free). However, you will for sure spend lots of money on the Murano’s souvenirs – it is really hard to stop when you see all this beauty made of glass.

Street Artists

by newsphotogirl

There were street artists everywhere. Some simply dressed in Venetian costume others played the guitar or entertained the crowd with props.

We came across one guy dressed as a statue who would wink and make kissy noises at women when they walked by. He was a riot. We also listened to a guy doing a horrible cover of Hotel California. Absolutely terrible. And then there was a glass musician.

As we got closer to Piazza San Marco the musicians got better.
