Poveglia, really??
by edsephiroth
Ok, is there REALLY no way to get onto the island (short of taking your own boat)?? That seems unlikely, no?
Re: Poveglia, really??

The island is extremely small and mostly farmland. I'm sure one of the expensive water-taxis would take you to have a look (from the water) but there is no right of public access. I don't find that unlikely at all, if the land is privately owned.
Travel Tips for Venice
~ Meeting In Venice ~
by Carnation
While I was staying in Trieste I had the opportunity to meet up with 3 VT members: Sarah (Venusia) - Elise (Primrosehill) and Cristiano (Banjo) - I had already met Cristiano in Trieste and from there we took the train to Venice at a cost of L15,300 return ticket each. We caught the 9am train from the central station in the center of Trieste and the journey took 2 hours with a few stops on the way. Eventually we arrived at the Venezia Santa Lucia terminal where we were greeted by Sarah. We moved on to another platform where we then waited for the arrival of Elise. All said and done, we set off on our short stay to explore the city. From left to right: Elise, Myself, Sarah
Looking at the Details

The Camanile was 8 € each.
Most people, when they go up in the Campanile, just take pictures of the things on the ground (photo 5). But the inside is interesting too. There is an elevator - you don't have to walk up.
The elevator (photo 4) is kind of dim inside and crowded and hard to take a picture. There is fancy ironwork in the elevator cage (photo 2). and the fancy gate at the bottom too (photo 3). These things are all part of the experience. There are the 5 bells of various sizes: the Nona, that chimed on the ninth hour, the Marangona (from "marangon", or carpenter), that chimed in the morning and evening – to mark the beginning and end of the working day, the Maleficio, that announced those condemned to death, and finally the Trottiera and the bell of the Pregadi, that called the judges and senators to their seats in the Doge's Palace. I don't think they will be rung while people are up there.
Libreria Sansoviniana

This is actually an old library, right in Piazza San Marco. At the time of my visit I caught a nice exhibit about the gold looted by Napoleon, which was eventually returned. I have a fond memory of a kind gentleman who explained the ceiling paintings to me and showed us around.
Venetian Masks

Venetian Masks
It's normal that people bring souvernirs from their trips. When you are in Venice, instead of T-Shirt buy yourself a Venetian Mask. Masks and costume play a key role in its anonymous world. The tradition of Carnival in Venice began in the 11th century. It's very popular for years and so is now.
Packing List
by pinganille
A nice suitcase or a good backpack. It doesn't really matter unless you want to look like the locals; chic.
Every thing fits in the traghetto, really. Good shoes for walking - especially if you plan to get lost;)! During the summer some ligth clothing will do as Venice gets very hot and humid, and during the rest of the year warmer clothes. I haven't been there during winter but believe it can get rather cold and misty.
Nomatter what season you go there, make sure to bring some fashionable or stylish clothes for when you go out in the evening - it is Italy, after all;) Water is a must during summer - you can buy it every where in small, handy bottles.
You will find most things you need in the pharmacies etc., still I prefer to bring my own things and brands as they afterall are more familiar A good camera and film than can make pictures without flash but still turn out good! There's a lot of places where you are not allowed to film nor photograph with flash, and believe me, you really, really want to!
