Cheap, CLEAN youth hostel, great staff
On this trip, I had my share of youth hostel troubles, and stay here was a welcome relief. The curious feature of this place is that somebody started to make it into a "nice place" but apparently ran out of money. So, in the same room you might see a brand-new bathroom with marble tiles and a bare lightbulb hanging on a cable. So there are some luxury features that are completely unexpected. The main feature though is that the place is CLEAN. Sheets are starched, white and high-quality, pillows are new, etc. Unless you end up with a particularly gross roommate, the bathroom will be nice too.
The place is located just outside of Venice (if you take #6 bus from the Piazzale Roma, it's the first stop on the mainland), buses go every 15 minutes or so. It's a quiet residential neighborhood, there's a nice bakery and a green-grocer within a 5-minute walk, and a couple small restaurants as well. No tourists around, mostly locals.
Unique Quality: The main feature of this place is the staff. Within a few hours of my arrival we became friends, spending every evening hanging out on the hotel's deck sipping wine and smoking. If you speak Russian or Romanian, you might find these languages useful - although one of the girls speaks good English. When you arrive, say that "Max from America sent you" :-)
