"Visitors from Eastern Venice : )"
Bangkok is also regarded as Eatern Venice because there are many canals in our city. It is good to see the real Venice. I have to admit that there are much more than canals in Venice than in Bangkok! but we are pretty close in numbers hehehe...
We arrived the train station: Venezia Mestre in Venice around 7.30 pm. The sun was not down. This time of the year sunset time is late around 8 pm. We then walked to find our hotel: Hotel Giovannina. The hotel is very close to the train station. It is just 5 minute walk. The front staff does not speak English well but he can communicate to us. We actually booked one triple room and one quadruple room by mistake. We booked all hotels via www.hostelbookers.com. When we found this hotel, we wanted to book 2 triple rooms but after we book one triple room, the triple room is fully booked. Therefore, we have to book quadruple room instead. We ended up paying more than we should.
Anyway, the triple room was not ready because the third bed was not set up. We had to come down and tell the front staff. He did manage for us promptly that was good though. The bad thing that I do not like this hotel is there is no lift! We had to drag all our luggages up to the 3rd floor!!! Thanks God that we stayed 2 nights here!
We decided to not to explore the city at night. We ended up have a dinner at Chinese restaurant which is located adjacent to our hotel. There was a big group of customers inside the restaurant but we had no choice. As you can imagine, we had to wait for a long time to get our order. I thought I waited for one hour! We were all starving at that time. The food is not good. It is under average for Chinese food and the price is reasonably high.
In the morning of 9 April, we asked our front staff. His name is Jorge. He would like us to call 'Uncle Jorge'. He is quite nice. He suggested us the popular itinerary to explore Venice for a day. He gave us a map and wrote down the number of Vaperetto (Water Taxi) that will us to Murano Island and other Island. He told us to buy 24 hours ticket which is worth 15 Euro which we can hop on and hop off any public transportation. There was another tourist group (I think they are from India based on their look). They were told the same by Uncle Jorge. Uncle Jorge always kept us waiting for his answers I mean he is not a good multitasker so he has to do one thing at a time. If he has many customers, he always told us 'wait for one min' and it always turned up like 10 mins!!!
Finally, we got one ticket (15 Euro) from him and he told us to show this ticket to the shop which is the place that sold the ticket. We followed his suggestion but that shop was close because it is Easter Monday! We looked for other shops but no shops had it. We decided to take a bus no. 2 to the main bus station in order to buy 24 hrs ticket there and intended to pay a bus fare on board. You know, we found the driver did not accepted cash on board! what's a shock for us. It means there are 5 of us have no ticket!!! and we were anxious whether or not we were checked! We were counting the stop to reach the destination before we got caught! We did not know that we did not intend to avoid to pay a fare though. All shops were close and they did not accept our cash on board which is weird!
Anyway, we reached the main bus station without being checked..Thanks God again : ) phew! When we were line up to buy a ticket, we saw the Indian group bought 12 hours ticket which is worth 13 Euro. We thought it was a good idea because we would leave Venice early the next day though. So we saved 2 Euro because of this Indian group! Thank you guys : )
Now, we all had a ticket and were ready to explore Venice. We took 'DM' vaporetto to Murano from the pier which is close to the bus station. They have very good signs for each pier so we had no problem to navigate the pier and route. They even gave us the route map for each vaporetto.
The vaporetto was full packed with tourists. We got off at Murano Island and then explore the Island. We went to see the Murano glass factory and bought some Murano glass souvenirs. We walked around and stoped most of the shops along the way ; ) We all did very good in shopping on this Island! We spent half day here! Gosh! We had a lunch at one fast food. The pizza place is called 'Jumanji'. We had Kebab and pizza which were yummy.
Then we decided to take another vaporetto to Burano Island to see the colourful house in the fisherman village. It was around 2 pm and there were lots of tourists that lined up to get 'LM' vaporetto to Burano. We could not get on the boat so we decided to get 'LM' vaporetto back to the first stop and we stayed on the boat. This way, let us have a seat and did not have to struggle in getting on the boat. The journey to Burano from Murano was long. It took us nearly one hour to get there. We were all sleeping ; )
We thought we would spent only one hour so that we can get the boat to Lido Island in time but we were lost so we had to wait for another hour. We walked around, took pictures, bought some souvenirs. The popular product of this island is lace. They are beautiful. There were many tourists hanging round sipping a cup of coffee or had a lunch here in this Island.
Then, again...when it was time for the boat coming. There were many tourists lining up again. We were late. It was nearly 5 pm and we did not explore St. Marco and other in the heart of Venice yet. We decided to skip Lido and went straight back to main land.
"St. Marco Bacillica"
We got back quite late in the evening. We walked around St. Mark square. The St. Marco Bacillica was splendid!!! We took ots of pictures. Then we followed the map and sign on the building to see the popular Riato Bridge. We wanted to go to any popular places as many as we could. So we can say 'I have been there and done that' : ) We had a short time though. I would love to have more time in Venice again. One day is not enough to absorb the beauty of Venice.
All our mission were accomplished so we headed back to our hotel. We were tired. We decided to have a dinner at the same Chinese restaurant again becase we wanted to ask them for hot water. We wanted to have our instant noodle which we brought from Thailand!!! As we are asian so we do not like to have bread, pizza or pasta for every meals. We brought our Thai snacks and even dry chilli paste which can make any pizza have better taste for us ; )
Rialto bridge connects San Marco and San Polo. It is the oldest bridge on the Grand Canal, dating back to 1591. There are many stores on this bridge. You can enjoy watching and buying souvenirs from the stores here or you can opt to walk along the side of the bridge and see a beautiful view of Grand Canal. You will have a chance to see couples kissing as they are standing at the center of this bridge. I have heard that there was a love story of a man and a woman who met on this bridge and they fell in love each other so I assume that this story would be the case why the couples come here and kiss each other. Unfortunately, I do not have loved one to kiss hehehe...I hope one day I will got back again with my loved one : )
Gondola is one of the most popular icons for Venice. The Gondal owner decorates their Gondola very beautiful to tempt tourists to ride on it. I heard that it is quiet expensive to ride on it. It may be around 100 Euro I guest but it depends on the place you take and also you can bargain. Personally, I thought it is such a romantic activity if you do it with your loved one : ) Do not forget to kiss when your gondola pass underneath the bridge and I guess if you do that you have to kiss hundred times! because there are many bridges in Venice...hehehe.....Good Luck!
