In August 2004 I stayed in the Albergo Marin, because of its vicinity to the central train station (Ferrovia).
Albergo Marin is a small, clean and basic guesthouse with friendly staff. I paid 40 Euro for a single room with shared bath. A continental breakfast was included in the price.
Directions: The Albergo Marin is located less than 5 minutes walk from the central train station (Ferrovia) in the district of Santa Croce. It can be found just behind the green dome of the church of S. Simeone Piccolo.
The hotel was close to the train station yet off the track enough to be quiet.
We arrived after dark in a chilling rain. We were greeted warmly and professionaly. Our room was well appointed and spotless.
We dropped our gear and were directed to a nearby resturant for a good dinner.
Barbara had lost her luggage on our flight. She was trying to arrange to find it with her dodgey italian. The hotel staff stepped in and took care of the whole mess. The bag was in our room A.S.A.P.
There was breakfast with our room. It was simple but good and made for a great start for our days.
Unique Quality: I cannot say enough about how nice the staff was. They were just great.
Our room was very nice with a great view and it was very clean.
Directions: From the train station head across the grand canal and take the passage down the side of the church with the copper dome. You will come to a tee go right take the next right and the Albergo Marin is on your left.
Albergo Marin is a small, family run, simple hotel, about five minutes walk from the train station. It's an incredibly affordable option in a very expensive city. The rooms are comfortable and clean. Some have ensuite bathrooms, others have a shower, bidet and sink, with a toilet in the hall.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and is a nice bounty of bread, rolls, jams and fresh coffee and orange juice.
Unique Quality: What I enjoyed most about the Albergo was it's location. Situated in a neighborhood where Venezians live, it was fun to open the windows in the morning and see the neighbors across the calle, greeting eachother and going about their day to day business. You feel you could reach out and pet the cat on the windowsill across the way.
There's a laundramat just down the street.
Directions: From the train station, cross the main bridge and pass behind the Church.
Tucked in a back street, this hotel had friendly service and a good price. Breakfast was included.
REVISED for 2010: Albergo Marin is still there going strong and still has free breakfast. Mention Rick Steves' guidebook and get a discount. Pay cash, too, for potentially more discount.
It's small and only a 1-star hotel 'cause there are 0 amenities. Lugging luggage up the stairs was tiring and hot. Still, the friendly staff and the great breakfast... not to mention LOCATION (across the bridge from the train station)... make this a worthy place to stay.
Unique Quality: It's in Venice and it's affordable... and they still make their own coffee/capuccino/lattes from scratch. Unlike most hotels, Marin's staff still made coffee to order. Considering a capuccino at a cafe cost 2 Euro and Lattes can run 4 Euro, getting complimentary latte (and a good one) at the hotel is a welcome start to your day. Thank you, Hotel Marin.
Directions: It's close to the train station
If you are into nostalgic - mis-matched yet somehow endearing places. Hotel Marin is your spot. For about $50 - 75 per night it's 3 minutes walk from the station St. Lucia. In a quiet cul-de-sac. Family owned and with typical italian breakfast (consisting of crumbly white rolls and steaming hot espresso)
I stayed there every year and have referred friends too who were quite happy with the location.
There is a "boat" stop close by and it only takes about 15 minutes to St. Marco - but TAKE GOOD SHOES!!!
As you will walk your socks off in Venice in general!
Unique Quality: You will feel like you entered a set of an italian movie of the 50ies ! :)
Directions: The hotel is close o the train station ( St. Lucia ( walk across the bridge, first left, first right, first right) this can save you a trip to the often crowded tourist office. Easy peasy :)
I stayed at the Albergo Marin in June 2004. It is in an excellent location just 5 minutes from the train station - just over the bridge and behind the church. The building is old, as can be expected in Venice, but was clean and well managed. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. They helped me identify several things to do during my short stay and identified them on the free map (which is both indispensable and useless at times in Venice)
My single room shared a shower and bathroom, but was clean and included a desk, sink, closet, and that's about it. Very simple, but for 45 Euro's per night, you can't beat the accommodations.
Breakfast (included in the price) was most excellent! Laundry facilities and an Internet station are only a few steps away. Highly recommended.
Unique Quality: Great location, VERY friendly staff, and budget prices.
Directions: 5 minutes from the train station in a more rural and quiet part of Venice. Map on their Web site.
I found this Albergo (Hotel) Marin while searching in the hotel section of the Venice pages on Virtual Tourist.
And I must say that the rapports were correct.
It is a family hotel, with a very friendly staff.
The outside of the hotel doesn't look so nice, but the inside is ok and very clean.
The price was also good, especially as this Carnival period is top-season, and all the prices are much higher then.
The room was ok, with a clean bathroom with shower and toilet.
The hotel is situated in a quiet neighbourhood, however that the Canal Grande and the boat stop (Ferrovia - in front of the railway station) are very nearby.
Continental breakfast was included, but I must say that of course in Italy there isn't such a great breakfast tradition, so it is not very big.
You are close to Piazza Roma where the busses stop, coming from the airport and very near the railway station.
Also an advantage is that in this neighbourhood - near the railway station - there are plenty of restaurants (with decent prices).
Unique Quality: good location, friendly staff, good price, clean
Tricky to find as the street is not on any of the maps we obtained (the street was on the maps but not named). There is a similar street name in Santa Croce on most maps - c della chiovere and Ramo delle Chiovere, which caused our main confusion. The hotel is on Ramo delle Chioverete.
Triple room with shower/WC E100/night with breakfast.
Unique Quality: Close to Grand Canal and Ferrovia water bus, and Venice main bus station.
Staff very friendly, with English speaking desk attendants. They took control of our lost baggage problem, contacting the airport at regular intervals until it was found and delivered to the hotel.
Directions: If arriving by bus, head directly to the Canal Grande. Opposite the Ferrovia water bus stop is a church, walk down the street beside this church(C Llo d Comare), then first right and next right. Easy when you know where!
A one star hotel with four star service. Quiet, comfortable, clean, modernized, friendly, English speaking staff at an unheard of (for Venice) 90 euros cash for a double. Just a few steps off one of the main trails to the train station, but off in it's own little world, a great find for the frugal traveler. No, you don't get a canal view for this price, but breakfast is included.
Unique Quality: Located in a quiet backwater off the tourist track, you can watch the local children play in the churchyard across the street. One could call it charming. It's a quick walk back to the Ferrovia vapretto stop for exploring Venice.
Directions: From the train station, walk over the bridge, turn right, then first left, then ask the first local resident you meet. It's a 3 minute walk.
