More about Hotel Palazzo Barbarigo Sul Canal Grande

Palazzo Barbarigo

by MM212

Famous for the Murano glass mosaics covering its Grand Canal façade, Palazzo Barbarigo is one of the most unique in Venice. It was built in the 16th century, but its façade was not covered in mosaics until the 19th century. The owners of Palazzo Barbarigo had the mosaics custom made at their family's very own glass factory on Murano Island.

NOTE: the Palazzo Barbarigo I describe is NOT the same as the hotel with the same name. For information about the hotel, go to their website at: www.palazzobarbarigo.it.

House Decoration - Mosaics

Some people think the glass mosaics on the Palazzo Barbarigo and the Palazzo Salviati are tacky. The murals on the Palazzo Salviati dates from 1924 and were done to advertise the Salviati glass factory. But one commentator says:

"After pretty Gothic Palazzo da' Mula comes 16th century Palazzo Barbarigo, disfigured by some tacky 19th century mosaics. The building gives on to Campo San Vio, one of the few campi on the Gran Canal."

Palazzo Barbarigo - the palace with mosaics.

If I was a rich man I would buy this palace on the Grand Canal close to the Salute and facing the beautiful Palazzo Corner della Ca' Grande.
From my first visit to Venice in the 1970's my wife and I liked this palace with a façade covered with mosaics from Murano what makes it unique in Venice.

It was originally built in the 16th century but the mosaics were added in 1886 by the new owners who had a company producing glass art in Murano (Compagnia Venezia Murano now Pauly & C). The transformation with the mosaics was not appreciated by the neighbours of the palace who found this bad taste of "nouveaux riches".

It needs to be said that Palazzo Barbarigo is located on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere at the junction with the Rio San Vio.
Actually as discussed with MM212 there are several Palazzo Barbarigo in Venice.
Most confusing is Hotel Palazzo Barbarigo which was also called Barbarigo della Terrazza Palace located on the Grand Canal but in the Sestiere San Polo at the junction with the rio San Polo (near the S. Toma vaporetto stop).
There is also a Palazzo Barbarigo-Minotto on the other side of the Canal near the S. Maria del Giglio vaporetto stop where classical music including opera's is played.
To make it more confusing there is also a Palazzo Barbarigo Nani in the Dorsoduro sestiere near the campo di San Trovaso.

Palaces with the same family name are rather common in Venice. It's part of the game finding the right one. The Palazzo Barbarigo with the mosaics cannot be missed.

Palazzo Barbarigo

A relative newcomer to the Grand Canal scene, this palazzo's facade is covered with beautiful mosaics that make for a great sight and lends itself beautifully to great photo opportunities. The palazzo is said to be owned by a wealthy glassmaker family from nearby Murano. Wonder if the chandeliers inside are made of Murano glass?

Palazzo Barbarigo

by Fam.Rauca

The Palace Barbarigo, situated at the corner between the Canale Grande and the Campo San Lio, was built in the 16th century.

The original frescos on the façade were destroyed along the time and remained none of them.

The actually cover-up of the palace was shaped in the 19th century, after the cartons of Giulio Carlini.

The paintings and the mosaics on the frontal site of the edifice were created by the artists Giorgione, Tizian, Pordenone, Tintoretto and Veronese.

Re: getting to hotel

The hotel location page suggests that the water taxis (which are very expensive, by the way) will drop you at the hotel itself:

http://www.palazzobarbarigo.com/luxury_hotels_historic_centre_of_venice-1449.html

This page will be helpful:

http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/water-taxis.htm

I don't think there will be much difference between 'companies', to be honest, but as I've never used a water-taxi (way outside my budget) I cannot be certain.

Whenever my wife and I travel to Venice we use the services of Venice Guide and Boat.
http://www.veniceguideandboat.it/transferapt.htm
You can pre-book a water taxi from the airport directly to your hotel and you can pay in advance of your journey.
We've used them many times and they are thoroughly reliable and trustworthy.

There is now a fixed price by water taxi from the airport to hotels in Venice: 100 € for 1-5 persons.
For details see my tip on Venice Transportation.

I travelled by water taxi from Marco Polo airport to our hotel near the Scalzi Bridge, and used motoscafivenezia, who were very helpful with our booking and pre-trip planning. www.motoscafivenezia.it
