One of the Few All Non-Smoking Hotels in Venice

Hotel Violino d'Oro is a small boutique hotel that was originally "Palazzo Barozzi". It is located at a tiny campiello near the San Moise Church. Its location is on the main shopping "drag" from San Marco to the Accademia.

It is newly renovated, but its 18th-century Venetian style makes it seem antique. The rooms are compact, but not tiny. There are Murano chandeliers on the ceilings, antique furniture, excellent bathrooms, and very firm beds. Our room was a corner room and had three huge windows that looked out over the small canal and the gondolier station.

All rooms are furnished with shower or bath, direct telephone, individually controlled air conditioning, mini-bar, wire broadcasting and satellite TV. The hotel has a bar, concierge, tour desk, 24-hour room service, laundry service, babysitting service, and lovely breakfast room.

We stayed for four nights and really enjoyed the hospitality, the location, the non smoking feature, the breakfast room and the food (included in the price of room), & the beautiful corner room.

Unique Quality: Just a few steps from San Marco Square, yet tucked away in a small campiello, The Hotel Violino d' Oro is unique. The rooms have very tall ceilings with white wood trim; Murano chandeliers, and lovely decorative touches (our room had dark teal blue and a small amount of gold in the drapes over white sheers. Wooden European shutters to keep out noise and the cold/heat worked effectively.

From our three windows, we could see the small Rio San Moise canal, a bridge, and the small campiello. The furniture was green antique with gold headboard, a lovely wardrobe, two end tables, a desk/refrigerator with marble tops on tables and desk. Also, there was a beautiful gold settee.

The hotel employees were quite helpful, making many reservations for us. But the best feature was that the entire hotel was NON SMOKING.

Directions: Vaporetto: San Marco-Vallaresso (walk straight up Calle di Ca Vallaresso, left on Salita San Moise; cross the wide footbridge, and the hotel is just across the little campiello on the left.

What a wonderful place

by TripAdvisor Member Ali378

We stayed at this hotel last week when we were in Venice. The location of this hotel is wonderful, right on a canal, close the the st. marcos square. The rooms were small, but very clean. Above all, the hotel staff is wonderful. We were a little unsure of how to navigate the canals to get us back to the train station in time for our morning train and the gentleman that worked the night shift offered to take us there in the morning when he got through with work. He not only walked us to the correct water taxi, but he helped us sort out our tickets and then walked us to our correct train. We would definitely stay here again!

Nice Place, Nice Price

This hotel was such a deal! We booked on [----------] and got a great price, and what a great hotel. One of the biggest rooms we had in Italy (with a towel warmer in the bathroom!)and the location was great- very close to a vaparetto stop and close to St. Marco's Square. I'm not into high-end shopping, but if you are there are dozens of designer shops in the area as well.
The night deskman was so friendly and made our stay even more pleasant.

Wonderful hotel in Venice!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Beautiful hotel right across from the glizty Hotel Bauer, only 2-3 blocks from the Piazza San Marco. Adorable, charming hotel on a small piazza right on a main street. In the center of everything, without being too crowded. Very helpful front desk. Room was beautiful. They "upgraded" us to a canal view room. In the afternoon it was a little noisy with the gondoliers singing and yelling, but that is part of the charm of Venice. No problems sleeping at night. Beautiful spotless marble bathroom. Good selection at breakfast of baked goods, salami, cereal, yogurt and coffee. I would definitely stay there again. This was the best value of the hotels I stayed at during my trip to Italy.

A wonderful stay in Hotel Violino d'Oro

by TripAdvisor Member DaisyDublin

We've just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay in the Hotel Violino d'Oro. It had been recommended to me by a friend. I had subsequently checked out reviews on and was slightly concerned when some reviewers complained about rude staff and even noisy gondoliers. However our trip was perfect. All the staff we met from check-in personnel to the breakfast waiter were so friendly and efficient. Our room (102) was lovely, with a view of Campiello Barozzi (with the noisy gondoliers!) but we enjoyed all the hustle and bustle and thought it added to the experience. Venice was wonderful and it was great having just a short stroll from an evening in Piazza San Marco to our hotel. Breakfast was lovely, great selection and good service.
We would thoroughly recommended this delightful hotel.

No need to look for another hotel in Venice

by TripAdvisor Member italiancook

What a gem of a hotel! It's location is absolutely perfect - about a 10 minute walk from St. Mark's square. The hotel gave us directions from the Vaporetto stop and they were perfect...very easy walk (about 10 minutes) from the Vaporetto to the hotel.

The room we requested was the one we received. For 300 Euro a night, I thought it was reasonable, considering we were there in high season, the first week of September. We stayed in Room 103 which was a corner room with three windows. One window overlooked a piazza and the other overlooked a canal with activity and gondoliers all day and into the night. Our room was a perfect size; I expected it to be much smaller because I thought that was the case in Venice. And I couldn't believe how quiet our room was, considering the action below. The bathroom was spotless and there was ample room. Check out the hotel's website - the rooms look just as the picture shows.

The hotel itself is very quaint. I felt as though I was in a true Venetian hotel. The staff was very helpful and had a wonderful sense of humor when we arrived with our luggage which was overstuffed because we came from Tuscany and we were heading to Bellagio, Lake Como after our visit in Venice.

Breakfast at the hotel was OK - I have been to Italy 3 times in the past 6 years and I thought this breakfast did not compare to some other Italian hotels. Some hotels in Italy offer meats, cheeses, fresh sliced fruit, bruschetta, and the like. Even though what Hotel Violino d'Oro offered was tasty, the variety was missing. Of course the cappuccino was excellent.

I plan on going to Venice again and would definately stay here. I have no need to look elsewhere for a charming hotel.

Well positioned

by TripAdvisor Member Yendys

Very well positioned, helpful staff, decent but not fantastic breakfast., very clean. We paid 216Euro for a standard room booked by internet and had to pay 280Euro for a canal facing room for an extra night. Oddly enough the standard room without a view was much bigger and more comfortable. No complaints but had the feeling we overpaid somewhat.

Great Location

We stayed at the Violino d'Oro for three nights in late September with two other couples. We chose the hotel based on the other reviews on Trip Advisor, and we were not disappointed. The location is fantastic -- a short stroll to Piazza San Marco. We were in a corner room with large windows overlooking the small square in front and the canal on the side. Although others have commented negatively on noise from the gondoliers down below, we did not find it to be a problem and we enjoyed looking down on all of the activity. The room and its bathroom were relatively spacious and well-appointed (the bathroom was equipped for handicapped use). The front desk staff were helpful, and gave us several excellent restaurant recommendations. The breakfast was ample and served in a comfortable room on the ground floor. This was a good location to use as a base for visiting the sites and restaurants of Venice.

I'm planning a trip to Venice in May and I'm about to book 2 nights in the Hotel Violino d'Oro. Does anybody know this Hotel and is it a nice place to spend a romantic week-end ?
The other question is if you try to bargain for a gondol, which best price can you get ?

I can't recall the prices that gondoliers quoted me, but I asked the front desk at the hotel what the average price for a gondola ride should be. Keep in mind that the price is higher in the evening.

Thanks for your tip.
I believe the price should be around 100 euros which is absolutely crazy !
