We just returned from a two week trip to Italy. While in Venice, we stayed at the Hotel Locanda Ovidius which is located very near to the Rialto Bridge. Our room although small was comfortable and clean. The continental breakfast was good. The hotel has a very small veranda which looks out over the Grand Canal-a great place late in the afternoon to enjoy some wine and cheese and take in all the activity!! Excellent location! We would stay at this hotel again if we return to Venice.
Absolutely do not stay here!

We pre-paid for the hotel months before our trip. The day we showed up, another family was in front of us arguing about their reservation. Apparently, Locanda Ovidius had moved a bunch of people who had already made reservations into other hotels (not even in the vicinity of Locanda). Part of the family had been moved to one hotel and the other part of the family to the other hotel. Anyway, we asked if we could check in and found out that they had also moved us to another hotel...on the other side of Venice. We went to the other hotel just so we wouldn't waste more of our vacation time, only to find out that it was a dump. I refused to take my shoes off. Locanda Ovidius told us that our 'Agency' had changed our reservation. So, since we booked through hotels ourselves, we called hotels that night and they said they had no record of our reservation being changed. The tried to contact Locanda Ovidius and no one would answer. The hotel we were moved to would not provide hotels with any information and was not a hotels approved hotel. I hope no one gives Locanda Ovidius any business. They certainly will not be getting any recommendation from us!

We stayed at the Locanda Ovidius during the middle of September for 3 nights. Excellent location, just a 1 minute walk from the Rialto Bridge. Very friendly staff, our room had a view of the street, room was quite small but nicely decorated and had a nice bathroom. Great feature of this hotel is the balcony which is on on the 2nd floor where you can view the Grand Canal/Rialto bridge area - very relaxing and plenty seats/tables for you to relax, we used this a lot as it was just down the hallway from our room. Also offers Internet access at a small charge. Breakfast was good, with a selection of cooked meats, cereals, bread, yoghurts and tea/coffee. Really enjoyed Venice, only disappointed with the lack of choice regarding restaurants as they all seemed to be serving the same menu at vastly inflated prices. Nice pub to visit if you want just want a drink and no silly prices, go to Devils Forest Pub,Calle del Stagneri 5185 - 5 mins from Rialto Bridge, 3.50 Euros for a Bud, best price we saw during our stay and no stupid Cover charge! Overall, looked at loads of hotels before we booked this one, worked out about £100 a night for September, very cheap compared to the rest of the hotels in the Rialto area - would stay in this hotel if we come to Venice again.

We stayed at Locanda Ovidius for 2 nights/3 days. Upon arrival, the clerk told us we had the best room in the house. It was overlooking the canal. The best room included a badly stained carpet and a broken air conditioner. We advised the front desk that our air conditioner did not work. He said he would get back to us in an hour. He did, but he told us that the air conditioner would not be fixed until the next day. He also indicated that there was another couple that was having problems with their air-conditioner. He offered us another room in the back of the hotel which was smaller and had no view. We asked him how much the room would cost, he indicated it would be the same price we were paying for the canal view room we had reserved (premimum price I might add). We told him no. We stayed in our canal view room with the windows open. We soon found ourselves being the main course for the mosquitoes. Nevertheless, we left our windows open despite being eaten alive and listening to the noise from the outside to about midnight. Our room was like a sauna, and we were unable to get a good night's sleep. The water pressure in the bathroom was less than adequate and if you want to dry your hair - well, I would suggest you bring your own air dryer. I am giving this hotel two stars because the breakfast and the breakfast room were nice. Overall, I would definitely not suggest this hotel. Look somewhere else. There are plenty of hotels in Venice.

I'd booked an off-canal room at Ovidius since the canal view ones were a bit rich for our budget. At arrival the receptionist cheerfully announced that we were booked in a canal view room. This is a mistake on their side, I'm thinking, at which point I recklessly decided what the heck, it's Venice, and after all these are the things we have plastic for. On paying before we leave it turns out the upgrade was FREE! This was probably also the best marketing trick in the book, since we ended up loving Venice and will most definitely return and stay at, you know here.
The hotel itself was quite up to standard, perhaps there is room for a little upkeep such as the carpets mentioned before. The room decoration is classical Venetian which adds to the atmosphere. The breakfast was slighty better than we were to experience on the rest of our three week trip across Europe. For the price, a fine place to stay at taking into account that it's as central as you could ever hope to be in Venice.

Amazing from first view, location was superb with restaurants close by, not too crowded streets and great view. The fairytale ends.
The booking was on a Autumn special, reduced rate double room with calle view, the room was actually 5 x 8ft, furnished nothing like the photos, the bathroom was clean and nearly as big! The view was someones kitchen so couldnt open shutters or windows to get light or air, when we complained we were told we booked economy (not so, this was a double room on special offer) we got ecomomy and they were full so tough they had other people waiting so we could leave, our friends whos booking i made at the same time had a lovely room with street view, good size and nicely furnished so we put up with the grey (used to be white) candlewick bedspread, the piece of mdf that had been screwed to the wall adjacent to the bed which was dirty and the rude staff. A shame about this one member as this broom closet single room because the rest was fine. Just make sure you ask not to have room 109!

I couldn't have asked for a better hotel to spend my 8 nights in Venice - 11/29 - 12/6/05. My room was quiet -- I'm a writer, and a light sleeper -- and beautifully decorated, fit for a princess! The bathroom was modern and clean. The staff was incredibly friendly and efficient, the breakfast was more than abundant, and you couldn't ask for a better, more convenient location! There was plenty of hot water and autonomous heat too, a must for winter nights. As a woman traveling alone, the courteous and fun staff and excellent location felt more like a home than a hotel! Don't miss it!

Great location and hotel, a few min from St.Marks square and only 2 min from Rialto Bridge, very clean, quiet and helpful staff. For the money an excellent find. Highly recommended!!!

This hotel was splendid. Like Venice, it is an interesting blend of cultural influences. Hotel Ovidius have rooms decorated with antiques and striped walls in rich hues with Venetian chandeliers. The location is fabulous, right on the Grand Canal, and a short distance from several vaporetti stops. The staff was superb. St. Marks is a 5 minute walk away. It was like a passage in time to stay here.

Which district is best to stay for a 3 day sight seeing trip?

Hi there,
Im taking my girlfriend to venice in september, i have no idea which district/location i should go for. I want to have a hotel on a canal if possible and be fairly central to all the attractions and night life. Any advice people could give me would e fantastic and very helpful.

Venice is a very small city, and very walkable. In fact, you could walk all the way across it in around an hour. The vaporetti (water-buses) are useful if you don't want to walk but walking is part of the romance of the place, I think (and shows you so much more).
So really, it's entirely a matter of finding the right hotel to suit you.
www.venere.com is a reliable site with honest guest reviews used by many VT-ers. www.booking.com is also good.
I prefer the quieter areas, especially Canareggio and Dorsoduro (perhaps 20 minutes walk to S. Marco) but you may prefer to stay nearer to the tourist heart: S. Marco and S. Polo districts. I wouldn't recommend a hotel on the islands if you want to access the city nightlife.

I agree with everything Leics has said.
I can recommend a Canareggio hotel, Ca' Dogaressa. It's on a canal (though not every room overlooks the canal), and just a 10 minutes walk from the train station. Quiet at night for sleeping. And the decor is quite romantic, bathrooms are gorgeous, so perfect for bringing your girlfriend.

I like to be on the Grand Canal, looking out to the Rialto Bridge. One old world hotel with modern amenities that has the view is the Hotel Locanda Ovidius. Look at their website and see what you think. http://www.hotellocandaovidius.com/

Like the others in the forum opined,Venice is indeed a small place.You can walk through the entire city.While there,also take a boat ride to Morano island where they make the world famous Venetian glass.You could take a free sales promotional ride one way even if you dont plan to buy anything.It is worth seeing the glass factories and the demonstration that they show.
The return boat ride has to be paid for whether you buy or not.
