This very unique 15th century palazzo is celebrated for its beautifully carved balconies. It is also known for the Contarini coat of arms on the façade in the upper floor. Palazzo Contarini Fasan is also small relative to other grand palazzi in Venice. It is located in San Marco and is currently a private residence.
The most unique of Venice's palazzi, the 15th century Palazzo Contarini is tucked away in a little alley that is hard to find. You need an excellent map to be able to reach it. What makes this palazzo unique is its spiral arched staircase. I only saw the palazzo at night from the exterior, but visitors are permitted to climb up the staircase for scenic views of Venice's rooftops.
This early Renaissance palace occupies an important position on the Grand Canal near Ponte dell'Accademia. It was built in the 15th century for the Contarini dal Zaffo family and is thought to have been designed by Giovanni Buora. Its beautiful façade is covered with carved white marble, accentuated with a few polychrome marble decorations. The palazzo changed ownership several times during is history, with Princess de Polignac being the most notable. Thus, the palace is sometimes referred to as Palazzo Contarini Polignac.
One of numerous palaces owned by the Contarini family, Palazzo Contarini delle Figure is distinguishable by the sculpted trophies on its façade. It was built in the first half of the 16th century in a Neoclassical/Renaissance style, and is thought to have been the work of the architects Spavento and Scarpagnino. The palazzo is located in the San Marco sestiere, overlooking the Grand Canal.
The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is an interesting Renaissance palace/mansion located just of the main drag in the San Marco region of Venice.
I class it as 'off the beaten track' as you would surely walk right past it if you didn't know it was there - it is down a very small street just off Campo Manin.
The main draw card is the fabulous spiral staircase located on the outside of the building.
The palace was built in the 15th century, and you can enter the grounds for a small price, but we just stood outside and took some photos.

Hi! Although it's closed for visits-ie you can't climb its insides, you can still see it from the outside, which is what I did, though it took me a while to find it. If you check out my page, you'll find some info about this place
