Where to stay for Venice
by GordonF
Take your car with you on the ferry from Piazza Roma in Venice to Venice Lido, plenty of nice hotels with parking and a vaperetto every 15mins, 24 hours a day direct to St Marks plus other parts of Venice. Get a 3 day ticket for the Vaperetto it saves a fortune. Alternatively stay on the mainland in Lido de Jessolo, you can then drive (10 mins) & park on the dock at Punta Sabioni and get the hourly ferry to St Marks, Loads of hotels in Jessolo and lots of beach. Remember Venice shuts down about 9pm so if you stay there be prepared. Venice Mestre is built up & industrialised so not as pretty as Jessolo or the Lido but there are dozens of trains from Mestre to Santa Lucia every hour. Venice!!!!
in general

OH WOW, WHERE TO START? Our favourite thing was walking through the back streets of Venezia with our trusty street map and discovering wonderful shops and completely empty alleyways and bridges.
On our way to Murano (which is very quiet but quite a sun-trap) we had to stop at Fondaco Nuove which was a really surprisingly quiet corner of Venezia. We stayed on Lido which has several cheap hotels and it's very easy to travel to the other Islands.
Everyone should go on a Gondola which usually costs approx £100 but you can go on the Gondola ferry which is much cheaper, though not as personal.
You are not allowed into the churches in shorts or other inappropriate dress. We were only there for 3 days but we already thought of Lido as 'home' and it was very sad to say goodbye to such a friendly place, especially our favourite waiter (no, he wasn't a lothario or anything like that, just a very nice man). Mostly I will miss the easy pace of life and the peacefulness, even when it's busy.
get off the beaten path....

get off the beaten path. Stroll around in the little alleys and make some great pictures. In my opinion, Venice is allabout atmosphere. I just loved to sit in the evening on the steps of the Canal Grande.
Canals - boulevard central
by Martin_S.
The canals range in size from the Grand Canal to little tiny things that only one single small boat can squeeze through, this one is somwhere in the middle size, but it runs perfectly straight, which was very unusual, most of the streets are squiggly, jogging, doglegging or wiggling from point to point.
Glass music on the street
by Fam.Rauca
On the streets of Venice you have the possibility to hear a glass music concert.
It is very interesting to hear the sounds that come out from the empty wineglasses under the soft touch of the artists.
This is a talent and ability of the players, and for the tourists, an unforgettable experience.
