Review by a OneTime.com West Chester, Ohio, USA

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. We requested and got a room with a balcony on the Grand Canal, it was spacious and offered a fantastic view. Our bathroom was all Italian marble and very nice. Thought the breakfast buffet was very good. We ate dinner at other locations. To find the dock on the Grand Canal just walk in the door and walk straight ahead......you will be in the water if you don't stop. Not sure how anyone could have missed it. We did get some unpleasant smells when we returned at night....not sure if it was just this hotel, typical for Venice...or what. Maid was spraying the halls with deoderizer. The location was very good, near a water bus stop and the rail station. About a 30-40 minute walk to St. Marks. The "ACTV Waterbus Ticket" is the way to go........don't be intimidated.....it is very convenient and economical. If you are going to be there for a few days, buy the pass on line....it is cheaper. We waited and paid about $E27 for 3 day pass. I think it is cheaper on line. We bought tours io the islands (Murano, Burano and Tortello)....DON'T....go there on your own. Not given enough time to see the Islands at leisure......a total waste. We loved Venice and can't wait to return for more than 4 days. Overall, I would stay at the Hotel Principe again......great view....people were friendly....convenient....Hotel Gritti palace is probably more elegant....but you will have to pay for it....and not sure what they have to offer in the way of balconies. Have a great time there. We went to 5 countries and 10 cities........Turkey was great, Mykonos beautiful, Amalfi Coast....beyond description, and Barcelona.....WOW.........take the bike tour....and don't miss Gaudi's cathedral and park............you will be sorry if you do.
last visit on May, 2005.

Right hotel on the right place

This is a hotel on the right place in the wonderful tow Venice. Not far from the center, not far from the station and last but not least on the busstop of "the Vaporetto"

Unique Quality: Everyone must (at least) once in his life visit the most beautiful town in the world (after Paris) Because this town is real history. Nothing has changed during the last 2 centuries in"VENETIZA" Realy wonderful

A pleasant 4 star hotel

The hotel is very near the St Lucia station, hardly 5 minutes walk. Hence very convenient if one has to catch a train in the early morning from Venice. The rooms are small but quite cosy. The staff are reasonably polite. The canalside restaurant is nice for breakfast although the menu is the same everyday and is a bit limited. The hotel is supposed to have its own private canal entrance from the Grand Canal but we have not seen it. Overall, this is a hotel that I will recommend to others.

Unique Quality: Decent canal views for higher paid rooms.

Venetian-style hotel on the Grand Canal

I stayed at the Hotel Principe Venice during my visit to Venice in September 2009. Located on the Grand Canal near Piazza Roma, the Principe Hotel is a typical Venetial-style hotel furnished in classical Ventian style.

Unique Quality: The rooms are elegantly furnished in classical Venetian style with baroque furniture and chandeliers in the rooms. Located directly on the Grand Canal, it has an outdoor terrace where one can dine al fresco overlooking the Grand Canal. A stay at the Principe Hotel is a perfect way to visit and explore this remarkable city of Venice.

Loved it!

We just spent the 2004 Thanksgiving holiday at the Grand Hotel Principe and had a wonderful experience! Our room, #130, overlooked the Grand Canal, what more can you ask for? Yes, the room was small but we didn't spend a lot of time in it, who would?

We got breakfast with our room and were delighted to see more than coffee and pastry. They had fruit, juice, eggs, meat, cereal, water, toast, etc. It was quite good.

We did have a drink in the bar and $6.25 for a glass of wine is something we only did once, although the wine was excellent! There are plenty of taverns where the wine is half that price.

The thing about the change also happened while we were in the bar. The front desk sent them to the bar and the bar could not help them. Since I have run single pay venues - I know what it means to have someone pay for a $12 class with a $50! It then leaves you with no change, so I had no sympathy for the tourist. When you go into any Country always get some coin change when you exchange currency! They also had money changing storefronts all over Venice.

All in all, if we go back to Venice I would book this hotel without hesitation.

Enjoyed the Principe

Overall liked the Principe, had two things we didnt like. First was dinner at the hotel, food barely warm and second was we were charged a 3.50 euro per person just to sit down in restaurant.Since we paid very good money to stay at this hotel,it didnt seem fair to charge you to sit down for dinner. The buffet breakfast was very nice and well stocked,it was included in our booking fee. Rooms were very clean,a bit small but adequate.Beautiful outside seating on the Grand Canal. Would stay here again but would not eat our dinner there.

We stayed here last week for 2 nights as part of our tour. We were very pleased with this hotel. Yes our bedroom was tiny but the bathroom was very nice. We didn't have a view (overlooked an inner court of pipes) but we didn't spend time in our room anyway..who would in Venice?? The location was great! The "tacky" chandeliers in each room that are mentioned on other posts are actually murano glass so we found them quite charming! How much nicer can you get! The staff were quite pleasant and we had good breakfasts and quite a nice dinner here. Another post mentioned the cover charge to sit in the restaurant.. this is common all over Venice so shouldn't be a surprise. It is expensive to eat/drink in Venice so just relax and know that it part of your holiday. We would return to this hotel.

a real disapointment

by A TripAdvisor Member

This hotel was a real disappointment. We had a lovely trip to Italy to many fine hotels. However, this hotel was poor at best. The staff greeted us by insisting we should be one person not two, the room was extremely cramped, the bathroom outdated (although the website states that the entire hotel was updated). The blow dryer was not operable. The website also shows lovely rooms, none even closely resembled our cramped room with no closet or drawers to store clothing! The staff was not cooperative, we asked for directions, they referred us the computer in the lobby which took us over 45 minutes and we still were unable to connect to the internet and we were offered no assistance. The staff was curt and unhelpful, the facilities old. The only time they were helpful was to send us to Murano on a hotel sponsored tour that offered no return from the Island! It was apparent to us that they made recommendations to restaurants and to Murano Island because they were receiving kickbacks. My husband tried several times to get change for tips and they told us they kept no money at the front desk for security reasons (scary for four stars!!!) and sent him to the bar who told him they were too busy to make change!!! The clientele was also somewhat seedy looking; people were constantly being chased out buy the staff because they did not belong. They say all rooms have air conditioned, another non truth. Please for your own sake, avoid this establishment.

directions to Hotel Principe Venice

by veniceryokoo

How to I get from the Venice's Marco Polo airport to Hotel Principe, located on Lista Di Spagna, 147 without taking a water taxi? I'll be arriving at 9:30am while my son will be arriving at 10:00PM.

1. Take the bus from the airport (the ATVO bus, not the #5 bus, which makes many more stops) to Piazzale Rome (see http://www.veniceairport.it/page/servizi/trasporti/treno?m=01020201&language=en for more info).

2. As the website says, walk across the Ponte della Costituzione bridge (across the Grand Canal) to the Santa Lucia train station.

3. Standing in front of the train station facing the Grand Canal, turn left and walk 200 meters parallel to the canal until you reach the hotel, just as the hotel website says - http://www.hotelprincipevenice.it/location.htm

Taking a water taxi would not benefit you in the least, except maybe that you would spend $20 just to cross the canal.

Look at the airport website above and follow the link to ATVO to make sure that the bus is still running when your son gets in. I imagine it will be, but worst case (like if he's late), there will be taxis at the airport all night that will cheerfully run him over to Piazzale Roma for at least 30 euro (I don't know the exact fare, but there's a start-up fee of 7.10 (day)/9.75 euro (nights and holidays), a 4.29 euro fee for going to or from the airport, a 2.65 fee for nighttime trips, and 1.39 euro per kilometer...but if he arrives at 2 a.m., it'll be worth every penny ;-)
