Most Romantic Church in Venice

by btarab

Hi There

I am geting married in Venice next year and I would love to get married in a very special romantic catholic church - a small intimate church. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tara

I thought Santa Maria dei Miracoli was the loveliest of the many I visited.

No idea whether you could get married there though.

It's the last tip on this page:

I agree with Leics. Sta Maria dei Miracoli is precious, and it was lovingly restored several years ago.

Or Madonna dell'Orto. Here are photos:

It is/was Tintoretto's church and is located in the northwestern part Canaregio.

Golly, how long is a piece of string..... there are a great many churches which fit your criteria. I would proffer San Zaccaria on the Campo San Zaccaria, also San Vidal just off the Campo Santo Stefano towards the Accademia Bridge. No idea if you can get married in either.....Santi Giovanni e Paolo is HUGE! Oh yes, San Francesco della Vigna is lovely. It is much more "local" than any of the others mentioned and has some wonderful paintings.

Taking a boat ride along the Grand Canal

by clairegeordio

A must is to take vaparetto no 1 from St Mark's Square vaparetto stop in the direction of Lido, then get off and wait for the next one to arrive. You can then have prime position for taking photos/filming in the front or back of the boat and will start from the bottom of the Canal up to the top.
Boat no 82 also goes up and down the Grand Canal.

Here's a map of Venice (sort of looks like a fish to me). It is not that big either. I was able to walk from the tip of the 'fish's' mouth all the way to its 'tail' in just one day. I did get tired at the end. (next time, I'll try the gondola! )
You can also receive a free map at any information booth. I got mine inside the train station.

Do they speak Italian in Venezia?

by breughel

Do they speak Italian in Venezia? No they don't.
They speak English.
As soon as a tourist speaks to somebody in a hotel, restaurant, shop, museum, transport or to anybody busy with tourism, they will answer in English even if that tourist started in Italian.
So, if from your travels in Italy, you have learned some Italian words or expressions don't expect to use them in Venice, they won't let you try.

When I told them, in Italian, that I did not understand English, they started in French, when I refused to speak French they went over to German. The only way I found to practise Italian, a language I love for its musicality, was to tell them that I only speak Flemish!
On this they abandoned and finally spoke Italian with me like I wanted.

Besides this, Venetians, as others Italians, appreciate when foreigners try to speak some Italian just to wish a good day or to say that the food or wine they were served was good.
These last years one will observe in Europe a strong demand for reconnaissance of national or regional identities. Language is an important factor of our identity on the Old Continent, something (often Anglophone) tourists forget. Don't be afraid of saying "bon giorno" when entering somewhere in Venice.

Ca' Pesaro

by croisbeauty

Most of the superb Venetian palaces facing Canal Grande and Ca' Pesaro is certainly one of the most famous. The palace is set around the courtyard and was designed by great Jacopo Sansovino. Today, it houses the International Gallery of Modern Art with works by the most important twentieth century artists, such as Kandinsky, Miro, Morandi etc.
