 | San Gallo Hotel Venice: Convenience with a LOT of Stairs

We booked this hotel because of its location (fabulous!) and price (cheapest around!!). The hotel is clean, and the breakfast (included) was by far the best meal of the day (another tip: Food in Venice is Not Great. Filet Mignon prices, Chef Boyardee quality). Big minus is the hotel's vertical location - the main entrance is two flights up from the street. No elevator. You must lug your own luggage. Our room was at the very top of the hotel (two more flights). After a day of sightseeing, the thought of having to climb four flights to get to our room was off-putting. We got a quad room which has one double bed (two singles pushed together) and two roll out beds. Springs were shot on all mattresses. Bathroom had all amenities (they provided soap and shampoo), including a bidet, but the bathtub was meant for sitting down, not for standing up. Taking a standing shower was almost impossible. Hotel staff was accommodating, but spoke English only kinda sorta. Air conditioning did not work, and when the windows were opened for ventilation, in rushed both cooking oil smell from surrounding restaurants and mosquitos!! Minuses are not too awful if you stay one or two nights - we stayed four, it was too much.
You can hear the bells from St. Mark's Square in your room which was delightful. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveDirections: Just north of St. Mark's Square on the western side.
