The place I stayed recently in Venice was the area of Castello, which was very nice, lots of great places to eat, shops, atmosphere and it is one of the prettiest parts of Venice (although it is all beautiful). If you are looking for a place to stay that is of reasonable price you could try the San Lio Tourist House. It is in a great location. The room is nothing fancy, but clean with nice high ceilings and sparkling new ensuite bath. I've also heard that Dursurodo is a nice place to call home for a few days.

Venice is a densely packed island so scenery is fairly similar irrespective of where you stay.
A room on the Grand Canal will be very noisy and smelly from the traffic.
Generally speaking, the closer you are to San Marco the higher the prices, and why?
The far Eastern end of the island, San Pietro and Sant 'Elena, is very down to earth normal working people neighborhood. I like it. Same goes for the Ghetto.
But really, anywhere in Venice is so close to anywhere else I'd say let price be your guide.

Yes, but price can also mean the price of eating out etc. and here I found you got a lot more QUALITY for your money by staying in for instance Canaregio where a third of Venetians themselves live. Still walking distance to San Marco sights.
