Venice has no public transport except for the vaporetti (water-buses), the expensive water-taxia and the even more expensive gondolas.
Venice has canals and no road suitable for motorised traffic.
Information about vaporetti here:
http://www.actv.it/english/home.php
Venice is very walkable: crossing the city on foot would only take around an hour.
Main sights include:
Basilica San Marco
Piazza San Marco
the Doges' Palace
many ancient churches with many great works of art inside them
the Rialto bridge
the Ghetto area
various palazzi (rich houses/palaces)
the other islands
Look at the VT Venice pages for info and tips written by locals and visitors.
The official tourist information site is:

Apart from the places mentioned by the previous poster, you could also take a boat ride to Morano or Burano. In morano you get amazing glass works. It is simply fantastic and dont miss it even if you dont intend to buy. When i went there(long agO)there used to be promotional free boat rides one way by shop keepers in morano(so even if you dont buy,one way ride is free)you will find boat men saying free ride to morano.however you have to pay for your return.
the food there is great.on the day that you go to morano, you could eat there as the food there is cheaper.you get authentic sphaghetti and pizzas and of course all other italian food.
In the evenings just walking across st.marks square with its pigeons and the music is an experience by itself.
happy travels,
vpas

Try to wander all over Venice... Apart from the most famous San Marco, Rialto... there are many even more beautiful and less known places, buildings... See Madonna dell'Orto, have a drink (or a meal) at San Giacomo dall'Orio, go to San Giorgio Maggiore (take a look from a top of the bell tower), visit Ca' d'Oro and Academia Galleries... Depends on your interests what are going to be your priorities...
Anyway - you'll have a great time.
With all the best wishes

Travel Tips for Venice
Walk as much as you can ......
by Pavlik_NL
Walk as much as you can ... through the little streets and alleys, from one touristic hotspot to the other. want to get lost? Use once and a while streets that are not in the guidebooks and just try to find your way to the place you want to go to next. You will be surprised what you will see and ... feel. Getting lost and finding places where we roamed around alone, between old houses with wallpaintings from long forgotten times. Silent canals and bridges from which you could gaze at the mirroring water.
Make a hotel reservation...
by BR0WND0G
Make a hotel reservation before you arrive, Venice is jammed with tourists. In almost every city in Europe, you'll be able to get a room once you're there without a problem. In Italy, it's better to have reservations first.
Ponte dei sospiri( Bridge of...
by chrissyalex
Ponte dei sospiri( Bridge of Sighs) It was erected in the 1600's. and it connected the Doge's Prisons to the main Palace. It was called the 'Bridge of Sighs' because it was said that the condemned prisoners would sigh as they walked through,on the way to the executioner.
Where the Locals park their Boat
by sue_stone
So when you live in a city built on islands you don't drive a car, you drive a boat, right. And when you come home in your boat, where do you park it....why, in the garage of course!
Take a look at this photo - it is a boat garage that I came across whilst wandering around Venice one day.
I guess the straps are lowered, the boat glides in and then it is raised up out of the water - ingenious!
Anyone know more about it? Let me know.
