Hi all,
I'm taking a 3 AM train from Venice to Florence later this week. I have a couple of questions:
1. how late is the mestre train station ticket booth open until? (i can't buy buy train tickets online through trenitalia.com because i have an american credit card that won't go through ...)
2. I'll be arriving in Venice from another place around midnight so I'll be at Mestre around that time. Will I be able to buy a ticket to Florence either via ticket booth or a automated ticket machine?
I know they have ticket machines but unfortunately my credit card has expired so I'll only have cash on me. Do the ticket machines accept cash? I'm getting kind of nervous about this :( I had a nightmare experience in Amsterdam with train tickets a couple weeks ago so I'm a bit wary of trains at the moment haha

unfortunately ticket booth will be closed at midnight. It is open from 06.00 to 21.00 but don't worry, you can pay cash in the self service machines.
Remember you must validate your ticket before boarding the train using the yellow machines located at each platform.

one more question--will I be able to buy a ticket for that day? I hear train tickets are hard to get in the month of August ...
well, your train is an euronight and it starts from Wien... IMO, it could be overcrowded on Friday and Saturday night because many southern Italians back home for holydays but there's no problem for tickets, maybe it could be an uncomfortable journey...
I didn't have the exact same situation, but the last two times I was in Venice for the day I was literally running to catch the last train to my destination and didn't have any problem getting tickets.

And of course don't forget to taste the wines from this region - around Venezia. From our side we would recommend for the lovers of wine taste the Sauvignon Blanc, Ascevi from the Collio region. It's fantastic and those who like the sparky, crispy white wines (as New Zealand Sauvignon) would really appreciate it!
Make sure you see the Grand Canal (it's hard to miss anyway). It is really nice!
We missed out on a gondola ride because of the bad weather but it would have been worth the expensive fee if we could have gone. With a group of 4 or 6 the price would have been pretty good anyway...
This lion statue is found in Piazza San Marco next to the Cathedral. I love to laugh and have a good time. So this statue caught my attention and the next thing you know, there is this crazy American in a hat yelling "Take my picture!"
There are Lions all over Venice. The lion is the symbol of St. Mark the patron saint of Venice.
Take a look on the roofs and plenty of domes on top of St.Marcus Chatedral
. It will be important to watch first for the opening times of everything you would like to see in the area of St.Marcus Square.
Then make your list of things to do first
When we reached the island of Burano on our cruise of the lagoon, we saw that there already was a boat parked at the island's small landing dock. However, there was no need to wait: our captain simply placed a wooden board between the two boats and we proceeded to make our way through the other boat to reach the dock! Apparently this method was devised to handle the flow of visitors which, without being heavy, can still be a lot to handle for a small island like Burano.
