Rialto Bridge
by catcap
If you like bridges and water you will love Venice. We got lost a couple of times and it was up the bridge and down the bridge and up, well you get it. I love these collored piers, there are many in different colors. I do not know what symbols the colors are for if any but I think they are great.
Proust In Venice
by luca68
My gondola followed the course of the small canals; like the mysterious hand of a genie leading me through the maze of this oriental city, they seemed, as I advanced, to be cutting a path for me through the heart of a crowded quarter which they bisected, barely parting, with a slender furrow arbitrarily traced, the tall houses with their tiny Moorish windows; and as though the magic guide had been holding a candle in his hand and were lighting the way for me, they kept casting ahead of them a ray of sunlight for which they cleared a route....
The next day I set out in quest of my beautiful nocturnal piazza, following calle after calle which were exactly like one another and refused to give me the smallest piece of information, except such as would lead me further astray...

JEWISH GHETTO
At the Campo Ghetto Nuovo, in Canareggio, near the Railway Station. In the 16th century, the city of Venice decreed that Jews should live in one part of the city, called the 'Ghetto Nuovo.' This was the first ghetto in Europe, and today is a still active Jewish community. Wander through the streets narrow streets, and stop in to the Jewish Museum, Museo della Communita Isralitica, (includes a kosher cafe) as well as three synagogues, Scola Canton, Scola Italian, and Scola Levantina.
Feast of the Redeemer (Il Redentore)
by nicolettart
Palladio designed the church of the Redentore, which is located on the island of Giudecca. It was built in thanksgiving for ending the plague of 1576, which wiped out one-third of the city's population. Every year since it was built the Doge would visit this church, crossing on a bridge made of pontoon boats. Today the festival is held every third week in July, with fireworks, a regatta, and the locals celebrate by cooking and bringing their food and furniture outside, where they eat and drink the night away by the side of the canal. The pontoon bridge is still built, and it is the only time when you can cross the canal on foot from the Zattere to the island of Giudecca.
Don't look like a SLOB!

One rolling bag per person. The pulling of one of these over a series of bridges will leave you at your wits end. If you must wear those awful white Nikes that look like boats with two legs attached try to wear nice slacks along with them. You can always tell the americans because they look like they are on the way to the gym and 75 lbs overweight.
I hear that rubbers are great for when the Square floods. Have sinus meds, bug repelent in summer, and things for upset stomach. Have more film than you expect. Digital card should hold hundeds of photo. And don't be shy of taking them. Everyone in Venice is taking pictures to show back home.
