Luggage on Publc Transportation

by DJHynds

On arriving at Marco Polo, do all the transportation Venues accept luggage, that is, the Vaparetto's, express buses and local buses? Are there any restrictions?

Re: Luggage on Publc Transportation

The airport buses have a hold underneath for large luggage. I am not aware of any restrictions nor can I find any listed on the relevant site:

http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en&area=23&menuid=35

There are no local buses in Venice, of course, only those which go to/from Mestre and other places in the area. These usually accept one piece of luggage, although it depends on how croded they re....I have not used this method in Venice with luggage. There is no land transport at all in the city: it all stops at Piazzale Roma, the end of the causeway from the mainland.

The vaporetti accept luggage too. You are restricted (on one ticket) to one piece of luggage up to 150cm as the sum of its three dimensions. If you had more than this, I imagine you could buy an extra ticket to cover it.

Hi! Public transport-there aren't any restrictions as far as I know.
The Vaporetto's can be a bit difficult with luggage if they're crowded-What time of year are you travelling?
Make sure to stand away from the entrance/exit gate, until you're ready to disembark.

Airport bus as Leics says has a hold underneath for luggage. The local bus from the airport has a small luggage hold on the bus.
Water Taxi-you will be charged extra for items of luggage.
The restrictions are only those for lugging cases etc around Venice- travel as light as you can- it's no fun carrying/rolling heavy cases over the bridges etc.
Have a Great Trip!

The ACTV notes the luggage restriction, Sue....I was surprised too, but I assume it just means you have to buy an extra ticket if you have more than one suitcase (why?) or a particularly large one.

Travel Tips for Venice

Rialto bridge and shopping

by andycandy

The Rialto Bridge is a famous landmark and a great area. It is also extremely crowded with ambling tourists. This area of Venice abounds with shopping areas. The more tourist of shopping areas are on the bridge proper.

On the south side of the bridge are the two main markets. The fish and produce markets are both worth a visit. Of course for people unaccustomed (like myself) to Venetian cuisine, the sights and smells at the fish market are quite an experience. Lots of cuttlefish in its own ink for sale as well as eels, octopus, and even a large swordfish head at one stall. It all adds to the wonder of Venice. The produce stalls are great for fresh produce, although there are all kinds of shops in all the various neighborhoods with equal, if not superior, fruits and veggies for sale.

This neighborhood also includs lots of shopping. My girlfriend bought a gorgeous leather jacket and a handbad in this area. Apparently haggling is somewhat OK. The first jacket we picked out didn't fit quite right and the salesman actually locked his store and walked us 5 minutes to a different store, picked out a different style (that fit marvelously) and gave us the same price - despite a sticker price twice as high! We agreed to pay cash and he knocked off 10%...

Venice by night

by HORSCHECK

Most historic sights and squares of Venice are beautifully illuminated at night. In the centre the sights at St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) and the Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore are well worth seeing. I would recommend a trip with the night vaporetto #N along the Canale Grande in darkness.

Views from Campanile

by sandysmith

I love to see aerial views over the city and one of the best places for this is from atop the campanile in St Marks square. Santa Maria della Salute, one of several plague churches in Venice, dominatings the sothernmost entrance to the Grand Canal was one of my favourite views from up here. Other good viewpoints to take not of are the other campanile - San Giorgio Maggiore, the Scala Contarini de Bovolo and from the top floor of the Naval Museum near Arsnale in Castello.

Flooding

by newsphotogirl

The street in front of our hotel had some serious flooding at certain times of the day. The entrance even had a barrier to keep the water out. So bring good shoes for walking through the water. Some places have temporary walk ways set up to help you get around. And at some of place like Piazza San Marco there are wooden platforms.

Glass Sculpting

by nicolettart

Wandering in San Polo one day, we stopped in a small shop of glass sculptures. The owner was working on a piece during our visit. It also was one of the cheaper places to buy souvenir glass, so we were thrilled! I think a set of six octopi were about $3, and they ranged from 1/2 inch to 1 inch. I love those little collections!
