best way to get venice to verona

by lkilmain

we are overnight in venice this august - want to get to verona for the opera but private taxi is 600 usd - for three of us. my husband has difficulty walking far so we do not know if the train would work - also whether the train runs late enough for us to return to venice the same evening as our ship sails the next day. how far is the train station from amphitheatre? thanks for any tips!!

At what hour does your ship leave the next day? The last train from Verona to Venice leaves between 10 and 11 p.m. - you likely can't catch it without missing part of the opera (I don't know how long it runs, but from other postings in the Verona forum, it runs later than public transit does).

The distance from Verona Porta Nuova train station to Piazza Bra is 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) on foot - a short taxi ride (there will be taxis at the station). But I don't see how you will get back to Venice the same evening on public transport...so depending on when you board the next day, spending the night in Verona would make the most sense...

I would also try to ask about organized bus tour to the Opera. I know for sure several agencies do that from the thermal area in Padova so I believe that would be a possibility also from Venice. Your hotel employee in Venice should know, and, if they don't, you can try to contact the Venice tourist board

and ask them about these kind of tour.

you have good advice thus far - depending on the opera - we saw Tusca - over abuot 11:30 but AIDA is really long - should take a bus from the train station to Piazza Bra - i do like the idea of staying over as it will be late - Arena Di Verona is a great setting in the summer (cannot imagine a better place) and the atmosphere awewsome. Take your time and enjoy Verona for a day or more if you can.

Travel Tips for Verona

Verona, view from the air

by sachara

Flying back home from Verona airport south of the city, we were lucky to have a perfect view at citycentre of Verona. It was great to see the river meandering between the buildings. I could even recognize the old citycentre with the bridges, the churches and even a glimpse of the arena.

It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to Verona, knowing you will come back some day.

Palazzo della Ragione

by danmcf

Between the Piazza Erbe, the Piazza dei Signori, and to the right, you'll find the Palazzo della Ragione, or Palace of Reason. Also called the Palazzo dei Comune, it dates back to the 12th century. The most striking feature of this palace is the elegant Renaissance staircase, built of pink Veronese marble in the 15th century.

Sirmione

This town, which was once a fishing village has it's old part inside ramparts and called The Scaliger Castle. It was built in the 15th century upon the ruins of a Roman fortress.

The prison was located below the 47 m tall keep.

A stairway with 150 steps takes you to the top for a lovely view of the lake and surrounding area.

The imposing structure, which was recently restored, is one of the main attractions here.

Nearby there is an interesting restaurant located inside a little castle and called

What is so special about it? Its name perhonen means in finnish butterfly. After asking the staff if it was owned by a finnish they said it wasn't and couldn't answer either where that name was originating from. Very strange but well their huge pizzas were excellent!

Piazza delle Erbe - Domus Mercatorum

by croisbeauty

Next to the tall houses of the old Ghetto is a low building with its battlements and porticos. It was formerly the Domus Mercatorum, a magnificent Romanesque building, designed in 1301 by Alberto I della Scala, and extesively altered in the 19th century.

San Zeno

by croisbeauty

The Basilica of San Zeno is without any doubt one of the most suggestive and better preserved example of Romanesque architecture in the whole of Northern Italy. What strikes the visitor most is the warm chromatism of the facade, due to the alternated use of tufa stone and bricks.
