Villa Francescatti by croisbeauty Hostel "Villa Franccescatti" is situated in a very quiet area, right behind theTeatro Romano, on the left bank of the river Adige. Although it looks complicated to get it, it's not so, just follow my instruction, writen bellow, and you can't miss it.
I didn't stay in this hostel and I can't help you regarding accomodation. The fact is that I found in only by chance when searching for the church San Giovanni in Valle. near the Hostel by alza From Verona Porto Nuova, the train station, it's a great bus ride to the Villa Francescatti. Almost like a city tour. Take the bus right in front of the train station, make sure you tell the driver where you're going so he confirms that he's also going that way, and hang out the window with eyes poppin! A young man offered his help at the bus stop and I told him I was fine. He got in the bus with me and acted like a guide and protector until I got off near the hostel. He got off too... and told me he knew of a good hotel. Ahhh I see... and here I thought he found me cute! haha. When I told him I knew where I was staying, he jumped in the bus going back to the station. I hope he had a monthly pass... The Hostel is about a 10-minute easy climb uphill from the bus stop. It's a patrician villa, with great gardens and all. Reception staff is young and very kind and helpful. The dorms have extra high ceilings, and walls are all frescoed. Magnificent!
I especially liked the quiet area. Not a sound at night, and I woke up very refreshed. The breakfast was as bad as any in Italian Youth Hostels, hard tasteless roll and bad coffee but I went straight out for a real capucco and almond croissant so can't complain. The Hostel has a midnight or so curfew but they'll make allowances if you have gone to a night show. You'll need to show them your ticket from the show and you get half an hour more than allowed anyone else to get back to your room. haha. It's very easy to walk from the Hostel to the Adige Riverbank, then along the bank to Ponte Pietra and into the old town. Head for Via Mazzini, the pedestrian main street that will lead you everywhere interesting and beautiful, including a modern, real sharp, Internet café on Mazzini, just before Piazza delle Erbe. The Hostelling Intl guide book says the Francescatti has a kitchen for hostellers but I didn't see one. the pic was taken down the Salita Fontana del Ferro, along the riverbank, right by a café (I know it looks like a church but it was a café.) I have no idea who was in my bed... by mapakettle Albergo Trento is located (according to their brochure) only 400 metres from the arena, and 500 metres from the train station. Not having a method of confirming this statistic, I'll accept the measurements, but have grave doubts as to accuracy. The hotel is on Corso Porta Nuovo, which is a very wide street leading directly from the station to the centre. The entrance was pleasant, and clean. The lobby, marble, not overly fancy, with a stern, no nonsense type behind the counter (she inspired confidence re- safety concerns) with tiny bar area. We were on a scouting mission to find accomodation for my mother-in-laws visit in July, and wanted something easy to reach/find, and this hotel seemed to fit the bill. The price was reasonable, 80 euro per nite, or 90 euro including breakfast. We have always gotten a chuckle out of the need to have breakfast included, but, seeing as how the next morning was Easter Sunday, we weren't sure whether anything would be open before lunch...and I need my coffee. Our experience with breakfast in Italy has been surprisingly good, so we took the option. Handing over our passports (this still is strange to us), we traded identities for keys to our new home. There is an elevator (great), because the stairs wind tightly around a narrow staircase, which would be difficult for the elderly, or those encumbered with lots of luggage. The room was neat, clean, marble floors, sparse, with a wardrobe, and private bath, and a curtain around the shower stall, which unfortunately did not reach all the way to the floor. Otherwise, the bathroom was very modern, with a bidet, and two sets of real towels, and another set of the thin flimsy type often found in Italy. We had a comfortable matrimonial sized bed, plus a single bed in our room, so additional pillows were available. A desk with chair, and two shuttered windows facing the street, TV, thats it. (balconies avail. in some rooms) The hotel room was reasonably priced, and quiet.
The best selling point of this property would be the location in regards to train travel. Also, close access to the Piazza Bra which leads to countless eateries and bars, and all the sights of Verona. A suggestion however, DO NOT TAKE THE BREAKFAST OPTION. We now understand what others have complained about in previous hotel stays throughout Italy. Breakfast consisted of a 'package' of dry 'toast', a wrapped donut, which tasted like a stale, outdated Twinky, a thimble sized portion of spreadable cheese, and a packet of jelly, and a packet of Nutella. Oh, and coffee, which was fine. That's it, no juice, yogurt, cereal, buns, cheeses...nothing else. Rip off, rip off, rip off. The gorgeous villa by lareina I would highly recommend staying at this hostel primarily because it is housed in a gorgeous 15th Century villa and has amazing gardens. It was nice to read by the fountains and enjoy wine under a full moon in the belvedere. I stayed in an annex of the villa, which was closer to the gardens, in a room for 6 females. The included breakfast was served in the main villa and was simple, yet plenty in European terms. The only potential cons of this hostel are the early curfew at 1130pm (but I think you can still hang out in the gardens after that time), long lock-out hours (9-5), and I do not think that any rooms are co-ed. Luckily for me, none of that mattered and I loved the gorgeous villa! Novo hotel Rossi by croisbeauty NHR is very good hotel, recently refurnished and convenientely located1,5km from the historical centre. Situated only 200 metres from Porta Nuova Railway station, it can be easily reached from the A4 Motorway exit Verona Sud. The hotel has 38 rooms, private bathroom, air-conditioning, mini-bar, Sat-TV and internet connection.
The NHR has an ample parking included in the room charges and garage available on reguest. The double room, very comfortable, cost me 77,00 euros and it is very good price for three stars hotel in Verona. Sorry about the crap photo by craic Ok we were jaded and Verona felt very jaded and I must say this hotel looked great when we arrived and the receptionist was charming. And the location of this hotel is extremely good - 1 minute from the arena in Piazza Bra. But the room was extremely small - why I took no photos of the room. And why have a trouser press taking up some of the precious space? Who uses a trouser press these days? But I don't mind that sort of stuff. The kind of stuff I mind is what happened when I had a fit of insomnia when husband had taken some pills for a thumping headache. I took my book down to the lobby to read - and I was somewhat in the way because all the coats for the jolly party who had taken over the restaurant just off the lobby were heaped on the couches - and tired waiters were lurking until the jolly party could be disposed of. However I found a quiet corner and was well into my book - which was very good - I Promessi Sposi by Manzoni but of course I was reading it in translation. Then I realised someone was speaking to me. The staff had all cleaned up and they wanted me to go away. They were turning the lights in the lobby off. I protested. "Go to your room!" said the guy about to turn the lights off. I know it was lack of English that made him sound so peremptory - and I did not go to my room - I sat on the stairs and seethed. But what is the harm to leave the lights in the lobby on? Especially as the night porter is bumbling around. Maybe he wanted to sleep or something, I was sitting on his couch. Anyway I was well peeved. Same thing happened at breakfast. Which was very lavish - for an Italian breakfast. We sat at a table and were shooed away by a waitress because we weren't sitting on the breakfast side of the dining room. But there were no signs to say where to sit. We felt like we were bloddy nuisances.
One guy on the desk was one of those people you find from time to time - he seemed to be in charge - and I think he had dis-spirited the staff. I saw our charming receptionist arrive for her shift one morning when I was out in the street having a smoke and she looked very down in the mouth. I would be too if he was my boss. It was awfully slack. We had booked with venere which meant we had to pay at the hotel. When we checked out the receptionist didn't appear to want to charge us. So we attempted to pay. "No," she said. "You booked with venere, you have paid." Well Matt whisked out the printout and checked and pointed out to her that we had not paid. She didn't turn a hair. (Perhaps she hates her job and her boss so much she is sabotaging the place? It's a thought.) Oh well. Rack rate was 200 euros and we paid 100 euros so I am not unhappy. But next time in Verona I will try another hotel.
