You must see the wonderful...
by rozehill
You must see the wonderful Ponte Scaligero over River Adige There are beautiful views along the River Adige. This bridge was the main entrance to the local castle for over 600 years until the Germans blew it up. The Veronese people picked up the pieces and put it all back together again.
Palazzo Canossa
by iandsmith
Together with Palazzo Bevilacqua, Honorij and Pompei, Palazzo Canossa is one of the four buildings in Verona that were built by the sixteenth century architect, Michele Sanmicheli.
He designed the building in the early 16th century but it was not finished until around the second half of the 1600's by Lelio and Vincenzo Pellesina who stuck to the original plans and built the two wings that overlook the Adige.
It is a stone-built palace with framed arch windows on the upper floor. In 1761, following the superelevation of the lounge to the upper floor, the loggia was added to the pediment with statues of mythological figures by Giuseppe Antonio Schiavi. Giambattista Tiepolo, that frenetic fresco man, painted the lounge vault with scenes from the 'Glory of Hercules' however, somewhat sadly, most of it was lost in the second world war bombings.
It's located on Via Cavour, number 48 to be precise.
Castelvecchio
by croisbeauty
The Scaliger period of Verona is one of great political influence, economic power and territorial expansion, it was the golden age of Verona.
Castelvecchio is a monument which could be considered the quintessential Italian castle. Castelvecchio or Castello Scaligero is a huge and well preserved castle right in the heart of old city centre.
On this picture is the inside look of the Ponte Scaligero, the three arched bridge - an engineering wonder. To see more about the Castle check my Castelvecchio traveloque.
Uno sprizzato, per favore!
by effeti
The "sprizzato" or "spritz" of german origins, is widely used as "aperitivo" all around the Veneto region.
What is it?
Basycally, it's white wine mixed with something else...
What else?
It is not a simple question.. while in Verona it is usually ment to be sparkling water (Wine lovers may desagree, but -believe me - you have to think of drinking it on a hot summer day with 28+ degrees celsius outside!) in Venice, without specifications, it's wine and Aperol (a ligth orange spirit, also used with water alone) and it is very good.
Some other do it whith white wine and one of the non-alcohlic aperitives (red to yellow coloured) such as Sanpellegrino bitter (also referred as Sanbitter), gingerino, crodino...
in the town where i was born this last mix is properly called a "taglio" (a "cut") but i don't want to argue.
Anyway, whenever it's hot outside, try it before lunch or dinner.
A game i sometimes play around Veneto region is to simply ask for a "Sprizzato", and just wait and see how this particular barman do it!
