Cramped, but friendly

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 1, 2007

We were a young couple staying in Verona for four nights. The hotel is a short walk from the train station and within the outer walls of the city. The room was a little on the smaller side, although there was enough space in the wardrobe to store your belongings. A big plus for us is that they had a desk and a reasonable number of electrical outlets. The bathrooms are remodeled and the staff is friendly and available at all hours. The continental breakfast is better than everywhere else we stayed in northern Italy, since they don't just give you sweet pastries, but rather some real bread with cheese and cold cuts.

It's an easy walk to all of the attractions of the old city (and you have to, since traffic is limited in the old city). The hotel's also close enough to the train station that you can walk with your luggage (if you don't have too much). However, a benefit is that you're far enough outside of the central old city that you can find cheaper places to eat. The hotel's price is cheap for such a combination of quality and location, however the standard prices for Verona are on the high side. The hotel is bookable only through their website--but it tends to run cheaper than hotels listed on the major websites.

Directions: Train station: walk across the bus area to the street light at a busy intersection. Cross the street & canal & walk through the city walls. A block later there's a plaza with many banks. Go on left road, Via Marconi is the 2nd left, hotel is 1 block in.

Convenient location

Since the original reason for going to Verona was to join the VT meeting but we couldn't make the whole meeting and stay in Valeggio, I wanted to find a hotel that was reasonably close to the train and bus station so that we could easily have joined the crowd in Valeggio. Moreover, we would both arrive and leave by train. At the same time, I of course didn't want to sit in a boring suburb but have walking distance to the Old Town and therefore Siena fit the bill perfectly.

For being Verona, it is a budget hotel, although by international standards, you pay a lot for what is only average (but then again you often pay full price for children in northern Italy which was our case). Having said that, everything is comfortable and clean enough. Our room had a TV (Italian only), good bathroom and comfy bed and also came with a nice and sunny balcony towards the inner yard. The hotel was clean and in summer you can have breakfast in the yard. There is an unexiting but decent continental breakfast for being Italy where it can sometimes only be a croissant and coffee and better hit the towns for breakfast. This makes it easier to bear the relatively high cost. Madam of the house doesn't smile that much but the men in charge are friendly enough, especially the night staff. They were all very helpful when I cut my hand badly on their sharp knives too. Before I knew if we could check-out or not as planned, they offered me to go to hospital first, never mind the check-out deadline as they weren't completely fully booked.

Unique Quality: Good location right between the Old Town and the station.
