Travel to Vicenza

by wanderwithshoes

I am planning to travel to Vicenza from Innsbruck- are there trains for this route? Is it ok to set up base at Vicenza and take day trips to Padua, Venice and Verona?

Suggestions, please.

Yes, there are many trains. If you are trying to save money, take the local train or bus to Brenner. Take the short walk across the border to Brennero, Italy, train station. Buy tickets to anywhere from the electronic ticket vendor. You will like the ticket prices. Trains depart to points south about every 30 minutes. Reservations are an expensive luxury in Italy.

Old hund recommends whistle stops in Vipetino / starzung, Bressanone / Brixen ( don't pass this beauty up ), Balzano / Bozen, and Trento / Trent. The alstadten ( centros ) are all near the train stations. I recommend staying at Villa Francescotti (sp) in fair Verona ( great prices, great friends and ambience ). Take a look at my Italy pages. They cover all of your mentioned destinations ( and Innsbruck ) as well as mine. And please, it's not Padua, it's Padova.

ciao ! guten abend !

Vicenza is a very easy base to use to visit the cities that you mention. The day-trips by train are easily made, and I never made train reservations, just showed up at the station and bought my ticket for the day. There is a local bus system, although I found that getting a taxi to the train station was quicker, so as not to waste any time. Most hotels are in contact with the taxis by a radio system, so the front desk can generally order you a taxi, and the taxis I found to be efficient and on time, in my experience.

Anyway, you will find a few direct trains to Vicenza (the ones heading to Venice).
But you may have a lot of options changing in Verona: every train down from the brenner pass stops here, and then you have an average of a train every hour to vicenza.

The Hostel mentioned is Villa Francescatti, in Verona.

Travel Tips for Vicenza

Basilica Palladiana

by croisbeauty

The Basilica was the first major work by Palladio and now the symbol of Vicenza. The contract to build the Loggia, the exterior part of the Basilica, was won by Palladio in competition with distinguished architects of the time, and his plans were not only to support the existing 15th century unstable Gothic building inside his elegant but strongly built Basilica, but also to include the "Domus comestabilis". This did not happen however, and the building can still be seen next to the Torrione del Tormento, one of the few examples of medieval Vicenza. The Basilica was completed in 1617, thirty seven years after Palladio's death. It has a grandiose double order of loggia's organized in the style of Serliana or Venetian windows - now also known as Palladian windows.

Torre di Piazza

by croisbeauty

Torre di Piazza is undoubtely one of the most impressing bell-towers in whole Italy. In my opinion, and I have seen a lot of them, it is the most beautiful aswell. I almost had to lie down on the floor to take the picture from this perspective. The Torre di Piazza is high over 82 meters and it wasn't an easy task.

Casa Cogollo - Andrea Palladio's home

by croisbeauty

So- called Casa Cogollo is situated in Corso A.Palladio. You can see it on the left, right in between Tempio di Santa Corona and Teatro Olimpico. It is under the arch, tall narrow and newly reconstructed. The house have been built by Palladio between 1560 and 1570, and was his home.

Palazzo Chiericati

by croisbeauty

Palazzo Chiericati was comissioned by Girolamo Chiericati and built by Palladio in 1550. Palladio took the advantage of the space available, building a large entrance on the ground floor and open lodges on the first floor. However, Palladio did not live to finish the building, and it is believed it was terminated by Carlo Borella.
The Palazzo Chiericati houses the Civic Museum since 1855. It is situated on Piazza Matteotti, right next to the Teatro Olimpico.

Palazzo Cavelli

by BruceDunning

Built in 1411, it is a typical style of Venizia architecture. It has a bit of Bizzantine style with windows of tribolate and the lo0ggia arches in the front. The building is in need of restoration, and looks as if the whole inside may have been a storage area for quite some time. Top windows are boarded up and the door appears not to have been opened much lately.
