Karosta Prison: A Perhaps TOO Unique of an Experience
I haven't stayed here yet. And to be honest, I'm still deciding whether or not I ever want to stay here. It may or may not be my thing. But, this place is gaining popularity and it's getting good reviews. Karosta Prison is actually a former jail, which was once used to incarcerate naval personnel and non-commissioned militray persons. Unlike much of the former Soviet base, it has been renovated, preserved, and now you can actually stay there overnight on real prisoners' benches and mattresses. It is good to know that there is only cold water in the Karosta prison and that the bathrooms are made in a real Soviet prison toilet style.
For those that seek the ultimate self discovery through an adventure they offer what is called the "night show" - where you actually play the role of a prisoner and the people that run this hostel actually treat you like you're worthless. They give you a prison uniform, talk to you like you're a prick, and lock you in a cell!

Hotel Liva: Hotel Liva
We stayed at this 3 star hotel in the centre of Liepaja once for one night, we took the cheapest room and it was alright, the bath was ok, not like top standart but we only payed 15 lat for a double and it had TV too, plus breakfast. However there was a disco that night, which was rather loud, ok, I dont care but my girlfriend did. So on the next morning, we had to leave anyway, I went to the reception and made a big fuss, and they gave us half the money back. Aint too bad if ya ask me. I guess Liva is a ok choice. because its central. I just checked their homepage, unfortunately prices have gone up.

"Liva": Hotel "Liva"
The hotel "Liva" was established on 15 January 1966. The hotel was named after the river, which is located nearby. The hotel was built on the grounds of the previous City Council, which was destroyed during the Second World war.
During Soviet times, the Hotel "Liva" was the most popular hotel in Liepaja. The political elite of the Soviet Republic of Latvia were regular guests at the Hotel. The inhabitants of Liepaja were not allowed to stay at the Hotel "Liva".
In 1991, along with the independence of Latvia, the Hotel experienced a major change. From 1991 until 1999 the Hotel operated as a Municipal enterprise, and during this period the Hotel was awarded a three-star certificate.
In December 2000, a newly renovated restaurant "Upe", a bar "Laiva", and the new Hotel reception area was opened. One of the walls of the reception was reconfigured and depicts the historical map of the Liva river valley.
The Hotel "Liva" is still the largest hotel in Liepaja and in the whole Western part of Latvia.
Hotel "Liva" offers 3 kinds of rooms: 10 business class, 65 standard class and 15 economical class rooms.
