Maza Smilshu: Home(s)
by mirime
The truth: i always prefer/try to skip staying in hotels and hostels for the sake of having something that i can take with me, an emotion, from a "real house" - i like home accomodations. My own kitchen, my own bed, my own cupboard. It does not mean that i learn to build a house in five minutes, no - i find an apartment to share with someone who does not eat my yogurth from the fridge. I love to travel with friends, and to feel at home where-ever i am. So my advice is simple: see the apartments for rental for a change. Naturally i would like more to stay at the house of a friend, this way there is more connection to the town, to the country, to the spirit, but even an apartment without a latvian friend can work. My favourite one(s) are on Maza Smilshu, the street next to the house that has a big black cat on the top of the roof, close to italian restaurant, an art gallery and a Vivienne Westwood boutique. I never stay for long since during the year there is always a Monday at work approaching, but weekends in the heart of my beloved Europe are sometimes enough to make me feel young and alive again.
It gives you space to breath because it is so comfortable, so much "i should buy this place!" The only thing is that it eats lots of money so it means lots of saving it for long months. I personally would do it once in a year, to be totally honest - but i WOULD do it for sure!
