help

by carpfanatic

hi

as said going to riga in october and I cannot buy lats here,,i live in uk.
The only place is the post office but they want 350 pounds minimum.

Can i use euro's in riga or is there a guaranteed place at the airport to get lats at 8 oclock at night

thanks for any help

Re: help

by leics

You should be able to use an airport ATM to withdraw lats, using your credit card or (possibly) your debit card. Check with your UK bank about using your card (and any charges they may levy) and let them know you will be abroad anyway.

There are also currency exchange facilities at the airport, 'adapted to flights time':

It is always best to use the legal currency in a European country. Even if you can pay in euros the exchange rate will almost certainly be poorer than at banks etc.

You should be able to buy lats from your bank, by the way. The PO may require a minimum of 350GBP, but my bank (one of the 'big five') certainly does not.

Hi, you can change it in the airport easily. Or there is also the ATM mashine, where you can take the lats out. it is possible to change GBP as well as EUR.

Travel Tips for Riga

Historic tram

by yumyum

When heading north to Mezaparks or the zoo. You may see this tram on line 11 which costs a bit more but is good fun.

For tramway fans: there is a museum in depot no. 5 which is open during workdays. I was there on Sunday which was hopeless. Ask for tramvai musei (in Russian) as people there don't speak English.

Pedestrian Zone

by tini58de

The old city of Riga is basically a pedestrian zone with only a few cars and trucks being permitted to drive here. There are barriers around the old city and you can only enter with a special permit! Very nice for pedestrians!!!

Sigulda

by SueWarwick

Sigulda, a town in the Vidzeme Region, is about an hour bus ride from Riga and is described as Switzerland of Vidzeme.
When we arrived we walked around the back of the bus station to the Sigulda Hotel (where we spotted the Canadian Luge team!). We got a decent map from the hotel and headed to the cable car station.
The cable car journey is about 3Ls one way and leave every 15 minutes.
We turned right from the cable car station to the castle ruins then followed the path down to the caves.
There are a lot of stairs down to the caves (which are more lake large gaps in the cliff face)
We walked through the woods which were lovely when we visited (October). Leaving the woods we headed to Turida Museum Reserve, the only specially protected cultural monument in Latvia. It houses a restored medieval castle, one of the oldest rural churches in Vidzeme. There is a lot to see here and it is well worth a visit.

Origo shopping mall

by gugi66 about Origo shopping mall

A shopping mall in the same building as the cetral station, there isn´t so many shops here mostly cafés and restaurants but on the third floor there is a few outlet stores for example Puma and Nike.

Searching for alternatively oriented friend?

by ExVoto about XXL

Well, The place for gays and persons which don't fear to be sooooo close to a gay :))). Staff is wide open for any sexual orientation.

Ok, I didn't feel my self in this place comfort, just 'cause of questioning glances to me, but in general that was interesting. Good music and bartenders perfomance. Quite sexy interior, with plenty of small cabines and dark hall. Guess that pros will know how to use them. Hm, I wisited the spot wearing my jeans and T shirt. Not realu sure that there is some dress code, but could be face control.
