Midsummer /Jani / Ligo in Riga?

by LilithDark

We are planning on visiting Riga June 23rd-27th.

We know that in Latvia people celebrate Jani June 23rd-24th and many leave the city and go to the countryside. Empty town doesn't bother us but we would like to know are restaurants, shops and sights all closed as well?

Is there any Jani celebrations in Riga? And be frank, is there any point in visiting Riga on those dates?

:)

Shops and restaurants aren't closed at the time, and although Riga is emptier then, lots of people stay in the city as well, because they can't go to the country because of their job..So, it's a national celebration, but not a day off from work.. I'd suggest visiting Riga at that time, because people are more "lively" and happy on Jani, and there are some celebrating events, but the weather often is rainy on June 23-24.. :(

P.S. I'm working on my diploma right now, and I'd be veeery grateful, if You could answer my interview about Riga Live campaign - it's not too complicated, mainly about what You think about pictures.. If You're up to it, here You can download the .doc with questions, fill it in, and send to originaly@inbox.lv - http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/229873/Interview-about-LiveRiga-doc.html - or write me an email, and I'll send it to You. Thank You.

Thing about Orthodox churches

by Raimix

It is so interesting to me as in other towns I see much different religion churches in old town. In Riga old town there are mostly Lutheran and some Catholic churches. The main Orthodox Russian Cathedral is in centre, Brivibas iela.
Surely, in Riga much Russian by percents live (about 35%), but I havent had that feeling as I heard mostly Latvian language around, only in old town some English, German...

Skating in Riga

by Inguuna

During winter time you can enjoy winter activities by skating in the heart of the city - in the Dome square. There is open public skating square where everybody who want and enjoy can do it. Skating place is operating by the city council, so you don’t need to pay for entrance only for skates. After skating you can enjoy the meal in the nearest tavern or restaurant.

Another skating square is in Lido centre, also very good, easy to access and after it you can have delicious meal. Nothing to bring with you, skates can be hired on the place. Only take appropriate clothes with you.

Towel heaven

by maria_hz about Rimako towel shop

The reason to come here is mainly to shop for towels of all shapes, colours and sizes. This is a factory outlet for a company that produces towels for export, particularly to the German market. There are more different types and styles of towels here than you can imagine, and the nice thing is that the choice is so different compared to Finland for example. Prices aren't too bad either. Towels, bath towels, tea towels.... We paid about 10 euros for 4 small and 2 big bath towels.

The taste of The Eghties

by ExVoto about Cetri Balti Krekli /4 white shirts/

Are you interested to hear what we listened while you went mad about PinkFloyd's Dark Side of The Moon or Black Sabath's ballads? Then it is the place for you. Named by very famous poem, which symbolizeded duplicity of soviet bureaucracy - with meaning that everybody had to have at least 4 white shirts/consciences for every case in life.
Do not wonder about interior - it is made ala eighties in soviet style.
Entrance: 5 to 10 EUR No sportswear, no jean, no sneakers.
