Hi!

There are buses.
Also Eurolines bus to Estonian Narva goes through Valmiera.

Thanks a lot. I'll look into that. Would you suggest buses instead of trains?

Rather easy, I'd say :)

Look at www.1188.lv, there's a traffic section (switch to EN or RU first, if not yet proficient in Latvian :).
Select either intercity buses or trains, whichever you prefer and enter riga and valmiera for buses, or select from dropdowns for trains.

"Kursē: 123-567", for example, means, that bus is "on duty" (?not sure if the term is applicable in this context) monday-wednesday and friday-sunday. "Nekursē" will mean, that the particular bus or train will not operate in a given time frame.
Text in the brackets will indicate bus or train operator.

Enjoy! :)

Travel Tips for Riga

Old town surrounded by parks

by Raimix

It is not so hard to see where old town starts and where ends - the main borders are parks. Crossing parks from old town's side you see the centre and vice versa. Parks are full of flowers, statues, fountains, birds - Is that I liked very much in Riga. One of the nicest park are Bastejkalns (Bastion hill).

Heels

by mandybailey

Ladies - it's wise to take a nice pair of heels for the evenings as the locals get dressed up for an evening out but beware of taking any footwear with skinny heels - they're a nightmare on the cobbled and untarmacked streets! Good luck!

Lido Atputas Centrs (Lido Recreation Centre)

by Lilasel

Lido Atputas centrs is one of the largest corner-jointed buildings in Europe, hosting up to 1000 guests, presenting a unique type of wooden building. Latvian and European kitchen, 3 kinds of LIDO home-made unfiltered beer. Live Latvian folk music every evening 19.00 - 23.00 in the Beer Cellar. Children and their parents can enjoy special attractions and entertainment, open-air dancing, concerts, fairs and presentations. On Sat and Sun children can attend the "Family Days" where they can dance, sing, draw or just have fun together with their favourite fairytales heroes. To get to this family restaurant take bus No.A17 from central post or tram No.7 or 9 up to "Dzervju iela" or "Krasta masivs".

Riga is nice at night time!

by Raimix

I recomend to see Riga as well in the night time - everything looks impressive as in my photo - Doma Laukums (Cathedral Square). Bridges, most famous buildings are decorated with lights, you can easily do tour at the night too.

Riga offer much discos, bars, restaurants, casinos too.

Getting to Riga from the UK

by aah_stone

Ryanair is the obvious choice for getting to Riga if you are on a budget and especially if you are flexible on dates ie) don't mind flying midweek. For example my flight was £23 return including all taxes and charges.

BUT..... Ryanair flies from Stansted to Riga once a day. Stansted is not the most convenient airport for me. However when sharing petrol and car park costs it is still very affordable to fly from here. Also remember that Ryanair charges for drinks and snacks.

It may be worth considering British Airways http:www.ba.com or Air Baltic http://www.airbaltic.lv/public/lv/index.html if you are flying shorter notice or at the weekend, they may be cheaper.
