ATM Riga Airport

by kevinhayden

Hi VTers

Is there an ATM machine at Riga airport where I can get some lats? I can't seem to be able to get lats here in Ireland. What denomination note is convenient for change for bus, etc?

Thank you

Yes, there are.

There is a few ATM's just as you have gone through customs. Very easy to see :)

Buss drivers all over wants smallest notes as possible ;)

hi!
some additional info:
regular city buses still have conductors, and they are not very eager to accept larger notes; 5Ls will be fine, but 20Ls or more will cause some anxiety. Prepare to receive a handful of coins in return :). Ticket price in regular city bus: 0.40

Trolleybuses and trams now use tickets, which can be bought at "Narvesens" snack/coffee/newspaper shops, there are many of them over the town, and somewhere else, but I don't know, where :), or you can buy one at the driver (if this is 2 car tram, obviously, in the first car). Price: 0.50Ls at the driver, 0.40Ls at narvesens or other ticket selling point.
NB! these tickets need to be punched!

One more way of transportation is to use route taxis (small buses, with route number and route description behind the windshield). It's better to know what bus to use in that case, because, they are always in hurry and overcrowded (even this is not allowed) at the rush hours. Price: 0.50Ls, to be paid to driver and don't forget to ask for the ticket in return; usually they gives the ticket right away, but sometimes "forget" to do that at the more relaxed times, e.g., noon or later in the evening.
Pros: they do not stop at every bus stop, so they are faster
Cons:
* their driving manners are rather harsh :), and one may experience some extreme feelings during the ride, but this is just interesting, not harmful (I've never heard of or experienced any accidents myself, I've seen one or two buses involved in accidents over the years, scratched paint, basically).
* They do not announce stops
* I'm not sure about average driver's English speaking abilities, but locals can help you to translate to/from.

Btw, regarding stop announcements - rarely, but it happens, that announcements are off by 1 stop (during these years in riga I noticed only one occasion, where it was off by 2 stops), so, to be sure where you are, check with stop names on the signs from time to time. most of the trolleybuses and buses, except for the very old ones, have both visual and audible announcements, so, pronouncation should not be any problem.

HTH and welcome to Latvia :)

Travel Tips for Riga

Lāčplēsis

by Lilasel

Attend any Latvian hockey match and you’ll undoubtedly see people wearing red and white-striped hats with furry brown ears. The ears in fact are one of Latvia’s most interesting symbols. Lachplesis (the bear slayer), hero of the epic poem of the same name, was the superhuman defender of the land from evil forces. Like all mythological protagonists he wasn’t all man in the sense that he had bear’s ears. Ironically he could kill bears with his bare hands not to mention Latvia’s enemies. On November 11, Latvians commemorate their fallen heroes who sacrificed life and limb to defend their nation. A sombre event, Lachplesis Day is marked by the lighting of candles in apartment windows and by Riga Castle.

Strange fashion

by deeper_blue

Lativians are proud of their independence, and whilst they are trying to embrace European culture and membership, some of their styles (notably dress sense) are a little strange. Not as bad as in the picture though.

Bastion Hill

by Lilasel

Riga is rich in parks and gardens. Trees, bushes and lawns girding the old part of the city offer a relaxation.Bastion hill was created from 1857 to 1859 to replace the old defensive sand walking street. Cascades and many trees made it one of the most visited parks in Riga.
Location: Separating Old Riga from the new centre

A highlight!!!

by Vincedem about Skyline bar in Hotel Latvija

An extremely nice place with an extremely nice view... its nice to go there at night but also during the day! There's a friendly staff, prices are okay and there's a nice mix between locals and tourists!

One of the nicest bars I have ever been to. You can go in in jeans

Buses of Eurolines

by Raimix

I made nice trip with Eurolines bus from Vilnius - it cost about 20 euros to come and back Vilnius-Riga. What is more, I was happy to go by express bus, it took 4,5 hours to go to Riga.

The schedule time I used (but it is more frequent):

Everyday:

Vilnius 07:30 > Riga 12:00 > Tallinn

Tallinn > Riga 17:00 > Vilnius 21:30.
