Xmas Markets

by doodlebug007

On reading a previous post it seems there is'nt one, but is there likely to be any Christmas atmosphere here at all (Old Riga town) at end Nov beginning Dec?

Re: Xmas Markets

by MalenaN

When I visited Riga last year (closer to Christmas) there was a Christmas Market on Doma Square. I read it is there every year with start on the first advent (this year that is on the 29th of November). Around a big Christmas tree there were stalls selling Latvian craft, linen, amber, glassware, sheepskin, hand knitted gloves and caps, wood craft and more. There were also things to eat and drink, like roasted almonds, gingerbread, sausages, smoked fish and hot wine.

Travel Tips for Riga

another Paris of the North

by call_me_rhia

Riga is the capital of Latvia and it is located on the Baltic Sea coast, while the river Daugava splits the city in two parts. Its Historic Centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Sitebecause of its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil buildings.

Just like any pretty city up north, Riga is given the much-abused nickname of "Paris of the North". The city was founded in 1210 and it had a turbulent past: sacked, occupied, reoccupied and then sacked again, by nearly everyone, in fact. I liked the old town, both with its old wooden buildings (not many) and its art nouveau facades. I like the maze of cobbled streetsd that I allowed me to get lost happily and endlessly.

What I liked was the buzzing atmosphere and nightlife, unfortunately this has brought many problems - including prostitution, crime (robbery and mugging) and, especially, begging... nowhere else in the world (including Africa) I have seen so many beggars.

Smoking and drinking

by Inguuna

It's not allowed to smoke in public places and public transport. If it's necessity to smoke better to check whether there are special signs which allowing to do that. Mostly in all restaurants and bars nowadays smoking is prohibited, you can smoke only outside.

It's not allowed to drink alcohol in public places, except restaurants and bars where it is served. It also isn't allowed to walk with open bottle. With alcohol I mean also beer.

A daytrip to Sigulda

by MalenaN

Sigulda is not off the beeten path but it is outside Riga. I visited Sigulda on a daytrip from Riga. It was in December and the weather was the worst, it was grey, there was some rain and on the ground there was wet snow mud. Sights are quite spread out around Sigulda so I went by bus and on foot (and got very wet feet).

The small town Sigulda is situated 53 km northeast of Riga, by the Gauja River Valley. The landscape is beautiful with rolling hills. There are many activities to do for the visitors. In the area there are many caves and medieval castles and ruins. Between the sights there are often good walking trails.

Sigulda is the Latvian centre for sports and outdoor activities. Besides walking you can in summer do horse riding, cycling, ballooning, bungee jumping and much more. If it is enough snow in winter you can go skiing and there is also bobsleigh run open on Saturdays and Sundays.

by Blondiina about boutiques and shopping centres

One of my favourite items, shoes! =)

Latvia is a shoe-lovers paradise (at least if you come from boring Finland). Shoes are very cheap and there are sooo many beautiful pairs to choose from. Whether it is Versace and co or 7 Ls leather sandals you're after, you are spoilt for choise. A couple of tips for other shoe-lovers like me:

Centrs shopping centre has a whole floor dedicated to shoes in the old town.

If you go towards the river from the Centrs, on Audeju iela, there is a nice shoe shop just about 50 metres away.

Origo shopping centre in the new town has many different shoe stores, all with competitive prices.

Palazzo Italia in new town sells designer fashions from Gucci and the likes.

Sadly I cannot remember the name of the place in the old town border which sold Versace. It is a small shopping centre and there are a couple of upmarket clothing and shoe stores inside. You can go in also from Basteja street. The entrance advertises a money exchanger right before the Marika money exchange office. 5 Ls upwards
