Riga - soviet town
by call_me_rhia
One thing I really liked, in Riga, was the Soviet architecture that could be still seen around town. Some really interesting Soviet buildings are to be seen along the river Daugava, in the outskirts of the old town - past the central market hangars.
My fascination comes from a simple consideration: each of the massive grey-concrete buildings can house as many people as my village in Switzerland (i.e. 1500 people at least). Different types of Soviet architecture: “Stalin-era” monumental architecture and “Khrushchev-era” residential houses. Beautiful in their own peculiar way.
My very favourite is the Palace of Culture and Science, home of the Latvian Academy of Sciences - when you'll see it you'll understand why... it looks exactly like one of the huge seven sisters buildings in Moscow.
Comfortable shoes

A backpack is good to bring along if you buy anything so you dont have to carry it. Comfortable shoes is a must if your planing to visit Old town, the roads are not so comfortable to walk on. Bring an extra battery for your camera your gona need it, there´s alot to take pictures of.
Parks

Everywhere you walk, a lot of green places are composing this beautiful city.
Could maybe sound strange, but even if the city could seem pretty busy, you can still find a peaceful place where to enjoy green, flowers and nice fountains.
Riga is really full of green beautiful parks.

GREAT BARGAIN

I booked a flight with Ryanair and paid only 25 euros, which was the airport tax. Many people have prejudices against Ryanair and I think that for many people who live in Helsinki it is a big step to fly from Tampere! Anyway I use them whenever it is possible. The flight was smooth and though it left late due to the weather conditions we were not too late in arriving in Riga. From Finland you can also take a ferry to Tallinn and continue by bus from there and in summers there are cruises to Riga as well.
