Im planning a trip to Riga with some friends in June, and we are thinking to stay in AVALON Hotel - 13. Janvara iela 19, 1050 Riga.
Anyone can tell me if it is in a good location in the city center, close to bars and discos? Or its better to find another hotel?
thanks a lot for any possible help.

In terms of location, it is good, right next to the Old Riga. One possible annoyance is tram rails next to the hotel, if one is not used to these sounds, it may be slightly disturbing. Don't know about sound insulation in the hotel, mby the problem is not a problem at all. Trams are off-duty approx 23:45-06:30 anyways.
Old Riga is rather small, so, if one is able to walk at all after attending a bar, distance from it to the hotel will not be a problem :).
Other possible option is "Radi un draugi" ("relatives and friends", translating literally),
It is almost in the middle of Old City, haven't checked their rooms, but kitchen is rather nice, and hotel itself leaves a good impression.

Hello again! Thanks a lot!
I checked the Radi Un Draugi Hotel, but unfortunately they have no availability of rooms during the days i will be there, but it seems to be a nice hotel.
I have to talk better with my friends, but probably i will book Avalon hotel, for what you said, it matches with what im looking for, hopefully everything will be just fine, and it will be a great time in riga!
Thanks again!

Travel Tips for Riga

Old town looks so cousy

by Raimix

The specific thing mostly about all old towns is that they are cousy. Riga old town is not exception and I really felt great feeling walking old narrow streets. The old town is full of historical monuments: churches, defensive objects, houses where famous people lived.... Some small parks inside old town are just nice, surrounded by old buildings, people sale souvenirs on the cobbled streets, street musicians play national melodies.

Chrismas market

by Vija_v

Over Christmas time Old Town turns into big Christmas market, where you can find many traditional things connected with celebrities.
Try traditional Christmas food and have some hot Christmas wine in there.

Bastion hill

by Inguuna

The Bastion hill is one of city's largest hills, which also previously was called as cockleshell hill, but personally I know anyone, who would say so. The hill was made artificially in the 19th century, taking down city's banks. In the green park, there are many pathways, where one can enjoy nice views, city canal and also small waterfall.
From it's beginning there aren't survived pavilion, which was located on the top of Bastion hill. But there is restored swans' house, which one can see on the bank of city canal.
In the park there are five stone memorial sites for victims, who suffered from guns in 1991.

Bastion hill is situated near Monument of Freedom and also closely to Old city.

A romantic place appropriately named

by happyhourkid about Candle Bar

this place is a definitely "date bar." But no matter what it is unique and defintiely should be stopped into when in Riga. They have an awesome drink menu. They mainly center on mixed drinks and wines, so if you're going in there for a Budweiser, you're kind of out of place. One thing I did notice is the martinis were HUGE, and even though it took 2 times ordering to finally get a good rum and diet coke, the waitresses are friendly. You'll also find interesting that there are sofas to sit in as opposed to the usually uncomfortable barroom furniture you've gotten used to over the years.

Air Baltic and RIX

by Yiannis2000

Riga has a very modern airport that serves as the main gateway to the Baltics!
Air Baltic is a very good LOW COST airline that connects Scandinavia, London and Ireland to Eastern European destinations including Ukraine, Crimea and Istanbul! Recommended
