Christmas in Riga

by RiikkaL

Hi,

we're travelling to Riga for the christmas, arriving at Riga on 23rd Dec and leaving on Sunday 27th.

- We haven't made any reservations for dinners, we just have the hotels and flights. Do you think we would need reservations during christmastime or can we just walk into a restaurant and hope to receive a free table?

- Is there a traditional chrismas dinner, and if there is, is it on christmas eve or christmas day?

- Is there any special restaurand you'd recommend (preferably something traditional)?

- Are there any special christmas-related activities you would recommend? So far the only thing I've found is the market on dome square.

Thanks in advance,
Riikka

Hi,
- no neede to reserve place for dinner, mainly everything is available;
- christmas dinner - sorry, I don't know, I think that such thing isn't popular here in Riga;
- you can go to ''Lido'' on Krasta street (ask in hotel how to go), like national restaurant/kantine, cheap;
- sorry, jet Riga isn't very active, cold is disturbing.
My best wishes!

Travel Tips for Riga

Latvian women

by bryonbrit

I am an American living in Riga and you will hear alot about the women here. Yes there are alot of beautiful women here but they are the coldest, unfriendliest, rudest group I have ever met and I have lived in several countries.
There are many websites trying to convince you that Latvian women would make good wives. DON'T BELIEVE IT!!! If you even try to ask the time they will rudely ignore you. If you smile at them, they will snear and look away. The sites that talk about introducing you to a future wife are escort services and the women are prostitutes.
This is not only my personal experience. All the people I talk to here (even the Latvians) say its a big problem. The only "friendly" Latvian women are the women who want your money - the strippers and the prostitutes. The websites claiming otherwise are lying to get your money.
I know that many men come here for a "sex vacation". Hey if you are paying them, no problem - they will be friendly. If you're coming here hoping to meet a nice girl or woman, don't bother. I'm not suggesting where you should go, just not here. If you do come to Riga just to visit, try during the summer. It rains or is cloudy about 95% of the time otherwise. Its definitely cheaper than England but its not cheap. In the old city, since most of the people there service the tourists and want your money, they are pretty kind and frindly and speak English. Outside of the old city, the attitude towards the foreigner is radically different. If you are black, don't come here. They have violent skinheads who target black people, sometimes Asians.
After living here, I don't really have that many fond memories to share. I am simply doing my job and when it is over I will leave and never return. There are so many other places to visit in Europe besides Latvia (or the Baltic states for that matter) that are friendlier and the same price.
Sorry to be so negative but I just want to share my experiences with you that give you an honest picture of Riga. Not the usual drivel about how wonderful it is here and how there is so much to see. You can read that from any website that wants you to come to Latvia.

Mixture of Languages...

by Propermark

When I landed at Riga Lidosta International Airport I was convinced I would have found all the signs written in Russian... but I was wrong cause I found Latvian and English signs!

Latvian people is always mixing Latvian and Russian all the time... so it could be better if you know at least a little Russian cause English is not so spoken among adults...

I found Russian language really charming and I like the sounds of words...

Ice-hockey World Cup 2006

by rollinstone81

The Latvians are Hockey crazy, they have a number of professionals in the NHL, Artus Irbe is a huge star in Latvija. The fans travel to the World Cup by thousands each year, and always they are the loudest and most dressed up and so. The World Cup in Latvija will be good for sure.
