Money

The currency in Latvia is Lati. Lati has greater value the Euro so when I got in the exchange office and changed 10Euro and got one paper banknote and a few coins at first i thought I was duped. But then I saw the prices in the shop-windows and they were, like, 0,05 Lati. And you can have a decent meal for a 4-5 Lati....
Anyway, picture shows what I got for 10 Euro.
Riga Black Balsam - Local Speciality
by MikeAtSea
Riga Black Balsam opens a whole world of sensations with its 24 ingredients. Subtle hints of linden blossom, birch bud, valerian root, raspberry, bilberry, and ginger as well as touches of nutmeg and black peppercorn tease the palate and come alive in the glass.
Riga Black Balsam was first made in Riga in the middle of the 18th century. The legend has it that Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, having fallen ill during a visit to Latvia, was cured after drinking Riga Black Balsam.
During my stay it was so freezing that I tried it - and I did not get sick :-)
Ice fishing
by Vija_v
As you can imagine, it's pretty cold in Riga in the wintertime. This does not keep people from spending hours just sitting in the cold. Yes, the colder it gets, the more they become. They are ice fishing on the frozen Daugava river.
The market outside...
by Kap2
The overall area of the market reaches 5.7 hectares, including 1.6 hectares occupied by buildings. The total length of the tunnel linking all the pavilions in between Gogoļa Street and Maskavas Street together is 337 meters, the main sewage system is 2 350 meters long, but the main water supply - about 1000 meters long. The whole construction asked 6 million bricks, 60 000 barrels of cement and 2 460 tons of iron. The overall costs of building the Central Market for Riga City reached 5 million lats.
source: http://www.rct.lv/en/history/ Riga Central Market (RCM) is the largest market in the Baltic States and one of the biggest outdoor markets on the European continent and world-wide. Inaugurated in 1930, the market with its five pavilions in the centre of Riga has become the largest construction project in the pre-war Latvia. The main function of the Central market has not changed ever since - it is still the widest and the most popular shopping and trading place in Latvia. In pavilions and at the market's open area farmers from all over the country offer their products - vegetables, berries, fruit, meat and dairy products, as well as other agricultural products.

It's not a place for me but I must admit - this is the best place to go if you hate to see alternatively dressed youth and hear their style of music. Actually it is the newest place in Riga with interesting interior and profesional staff, which won't let you be bored. No sportswear, otherwise you are free to choose what to wear.
