What currency is accepted
by julie626
Can anyone tell me if travelling from the UK to Riga you would take Euros or Lats
Re: What currency is accepted
by Durfun
I just used ATMs in Latvia, on arrival. You will get a better return (rate) that way, in my experience.
Lats is what they use & accept there, and 1 Lat costs more than 1 GBP!

The euro is still foreign currency in Latvia. There is no point in changing your money into euros and then into lats, paying twice.

BTW Durfun does this for a living HA! Surprised he didn't recommend changing your GDP for USD and then taking advantage of the misaligned exchange rates before converting via YEN into Lats. Viable D???

Ooops - GBP not the pre-unification German thingy.

Well Champ, I'm but a spring chicken ;-) I'm learning from your wise words.. I guess to follow your super-clever-genius tip our poster is looking at spending in excess of 300,000 GBP to make it all worthwhile??
Re: What currency is accepted

I assumed so too otherwise the question is about pennies.

OP, I still have some unused tickets for the quirky trams in Riga... Will post some pics tomorrow..
I do suggest having some snacks/lunch at Double Coffee. Good stuff!!

Durf - Comments are, literally, "out of order" and so to reply to your comment on my HP - HIC!
But seriously - sorry we got a bit off-topic here OP. Just get your Lats from the ATM at the airport and if it gives you big bills then buy a coffee (a latte of course) at the cafe there with the biggest bill you've got, get the change, and then it will all be plain sailing.

All payments in Latvia are in Lats.
You can exchange GBP or EUR in many exchangers of (or near to) Old town of Riga or in any bank, usually without commission.
Do not exchange currency in Riga airport - as most of airport's exchangers take a commission and they propose low rates.
Travel Tips for Riga
Fancy and expensive cars in Riga
by georeiser
Riga is a city with fancy and expensive cars. I noticed several Porche's, Ferrari and the most expensive Mercedes models driving around the city center. The expensive cars were also driving inside the road toll area in the Old town, where private cars are restriced to drive. Wonder why and wonder how they can afford the expensive cars. The level of wages are still one of the lowest in Europe.
Padlock bridge
by gugi66
This place was the best thing with whole our trip, the park is so beautiful and peaceful. The Pilsetas kanal runns right through and there is a small bridge in the park (look at the pictures) on this bridge it´s tradition to hang a padlock there with the names of those in love. It means that the love of the people who hang their padlocks there will last for ever, and the couple throw the key in the kanal when they locked the padlock.
This is one of the most beautiful parks I´v seen. It´s definatly worth a trip just to go to the park.
This bridge is located in Bastejkalns park just besides Freedom Statue.
Riga This Week
by HORSCHECK
The tourist magazine "Riga This Week" is published 8 times a year. It is available free of charge at the Tourist Information Bureaus and many other places all around the town. The magazine provides information on what to do and where to go in Riga. Moreover it includes an event calendar and various city maps.
Berga Bazars
by tini58de
Bergs Bazars is a mixture of residential and commercial area. It is sort of a courtyard right behind Bergs Hotel and has a lot of nice little shops and cafés and restaurants. On every second and fourth Saturday you will be able to find an Eco market here and once in awhile there is a very small fleamarket here as well!
We did not really buy anything here, but we did enjoy a hot chocolate at Emihls Gustafs Chocolate Place - yummy!
Fraud in Nightclubs
by gregexplorer
Never visit any nightclub in Riga before checking online the reviews or reviews from friends, otherwise you will be one of the victims who lost the money in night clubs and strip bars.
Never trust local girls in Riga and try to look always menu before ordering any drinks.
